We require an IV be placed upon admission, and we need to have continuous monitoring so you won’t be allowed to move any further than the length of the wires, and we prefer you stay in bed so we can get the best readings.” -OB to mother expressing her desire for a natural childbirth.

“The reason for the cesarean had nothing to do with you!” -OB to a mother who had a cesarean for significant fetal decelarations while pushing, where the baby needed the NICU for several days after birth. The OB told the mother she would be an excellent candidate for a VBAC in the future.

“Well, you came to the hospital to make sure you’d have this kind of thing available, so why don’t you just go ahead and make use of it? Why else would you be here?” – CNM trying to convince a mother to have an internal fetal monitor placed because the mom’s movements during labor were shifting the external monitor sensors. Baby was born less than 30 minutes after mom refused the internal monitor.
