My first son was a hospital birth. When I was in labor, admitted to the hospital and brought to labor and delivery, the anesthesiologist came by to go over my birth plan. He read it quickly and asked me if anything had changed. I told him no – I wanted to do as much as I could without medication and if I decided to use medication I had decided what I was and wasn’t okay with. He put a copy of my birth plan in his clipboard, smiled and said “Well, you seem like a woman who knows what she wants. If you need me, I’ll be glad to come back. Otherwise, I hope all goes well for you; this is a big day!”
