Mother’s Day Sunday Sweet: “…You’re Not Sick…”
“We’ll play it by ear, but you should be able to go in under 24 hours. You’re not sick, and you want to go home.” – OB to mother who wanted to know how soon after birth she could be discharged.
OB, OB, I love you so. Please move to my town!!!

Awesome OB! I had to fight to get discharged because my 3rd baby tested coombs positive, even though she showed no signs of being jaundiced after 36 hours of being in the hospital. I finally talked them into letting me leave when I scheduled a doctor appointment for the next day for our ped to look her over the next day to make sure she did not magically come down with jaundice overnight. I wanted to just leave AMA, but then we would have had to fight with our insurance to get our stay covered.

Just a note, being discharged AMA does NOT affect your insurance coverage, despite how much medical care providers use this as a scare tactic. And to be fair…some doctors honestly believe it to be true because they were told it was true by other doctors.

This is mine!
This is not the OB who ended up delivering, and we ended up with a (unnecessary, to my mind) C-section for a frank breech little girl.
In spite of that, we still left in under 36 hours and got amazing support from all the nurses and doctors (except the hospital peds. They were ridic.)

Yay! I had to fight like crazy to go home at 30 hours and I couldn’t have done it without the help of a truly awesome nurse. OP, I’m so glad your OB recognized that birth is an event, not an illness.
