Mother’s Day Sunday Sweet: “I Don’t See Any Reason Why You Won’t Be Able to Have A…Home Birth!”
“You know where we are if you need us. But everything looks perfect and I don’t see any reason why you won’t be able to have a successful home birth!” – OB to mother planning a home birth.
Did anyone else have that theatrical “hallelujah” reaction going on in their head?
I read this post and in my mind I think of that scene seen in so many movies, tv shows, plays, etc.. where a character says exactly what the protagonist needs to hear, so a beam of light shines down on them and a chorus sings out from all around, “hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah…”

My NP said this exact same thing when I told her that I wouldn’t be coming back after the last appointment I was there for. I really wanted to tell my OB, but I rarely got to see her. I was very surprised they were so cool about it. Even when I went in after my son was born (mastitis after a week) they were all, “How was the home birth? He looks great!”

This one was mine! It was said during my 20w ultrasound; this practice was actually the only one I could find that would do an anatomic ultrasound for me, since I was planning a home birth.
Unfortunately, I developed pre-eclampsia with this pregnancy at about 33 weeks. This OB practice took me back, and both OBs in the practice were amazing! Despite the pre-e, they didn’t push for an induction. When I *chose* to be induced at 38w2d (my bp was creeping up even higher), they were super supportive. During the 36-ish hours of my induction, I was “allowed” to eat, drink, walk, get in the tub, have visitors and decline any procedure I wanted to. I made every decision myself, with my OB providing advice and encouragement but never pushing me. When my daughter was finally born, I caught her myself. My doula later said that my OB basically sat there with his hands by his sides, ready if I needed him but in no hurry to intervene. He even asked if I wanted to feel the cord to make sure it was not pulsing before my doula cut it. My baby didn’t leave my arms for the first couple hours of her life, and didn’t leave my sight for the first week or so. It was totally amazing! And completely unlike the birth of my first daughter, where I also had pre-e, but the OBs treated me like a particularly dull-witted piece of meat.
Suffice it to say, I recommend this practice to EVERY pregnant woman I know <3 <3 <3

I’m a 3-time PE survivor as well. Would you be willing to share one or both of your PE/birth stories with me for my blog? I’m running a marathon as a fundraiser for the Preelcampsia Foundation, and I want to feature survivor stories each week leading up to it. I dedicate my weekend training run to the featured mother and baby. My blog is at whatyourunningfor.blogspot.com and you can e-mail me at kingtaran at yahoo dot com if you’re interested.
