“You Handled That Well…No Four Letter Words Or Anything.”
“You handled that well. Just like your delivery, no four-letter words or anything.” – OB, to mother after IUD insertion. The same OB had instructed mother to stop screaming during her labor.
If sarcasm: what a fucking douchebag.
If memory like sieve: what a fucking douchebag.
It’s rude, no matter how you look at it. You’re either worth insulting or not worth remembering in the slightest. Or he sucks at reading charts (did you know they have an entire LANGUAGE of acronyms that are insulting and degrading to patients?).

you do realize that those acronyms don’t go in charts right? and also that they’re not being used (at least not a majority of the time and if so shame on that medical professional) to degrade patients. i work in emergency medicine and many days our good days make regular profession’s bad days look like a walk in the park. are there bad providers out there…obviously. but most people who work in medicine do so because they care about people and they do truly love their jobs. taht said, there is a lot of dark humor in medicine. it’s how we can get through the day and manage to keep our sanity. it’s how we deal with all the awful things that we see people do to each other or themselves.

I said, “Ow, ow, OW!” during my labor and my doula told me to stop screaming.
Found out later I had a UTI *and* kidney stones, which made me hurt in between contractions more than during!

You know, I find this one downright offensive. Not everyone feels the need to use curse words while in pain. I know I certainly don’t. But for some people, curse words are part of their everyday vocabulary and I understand that. Those people more than likely will use them while in a painful situation and that is their right. I don’t like the shaming attitude this doctor has.

Then there’s also the fact that even people who DON’T swear on a regular basis will often go into pirate mode during labor/birth. Swearing loudly is actually a proven pain reliever. Tested on Mythbusters and everything. Try it next time you stub your toe or smash your funny bone.

And then there are women like me. I cuss like a sailor normally. I blame my four years in the Marines. Lol However, the only time I swore while in labor was when the midwife totally pissed me off. I did tell dh in the way to the hospital that I that changed my mind and wanted to stay pregnant.

LOL at wanting to stay pregnant. I asked my midwife if we could just skip this part during my last labor. But that was during the “ring of fire” which lasted for THREE contractions (he had a very big head and I was purposefully going slowly because I didn’t want to tear like I had with my first).

I’m with you lizzie! I curse like a sailor without shame. It’s just me. I get that others don’t and that’s okay too. I don’t do it every sentence, or even every other sentence, but when I’m feeling it, I do NOT hold back, nor do I think I should have to! I’ve even heard that the distinguished Jackie O herself liked to swear!

This one’s mine. I’ve shared one of this OB’s comments before–she’s not a bad person, just completely clueless about physiological birth. Things went down very differently at the hospital than she told me they would, and frankly, she was lucky to get anything less than a kick in the face from me that day! Thankfully our inside baby is going to be born at home with a midwife.

Methinks we are not remembering the same birth.
