“You Are 100% Welcome To Attempt A Natural Birth, But…”
“You are 100% welcome to attempt a natural birth, but you will be checked every 2 hours and have constant fetal monitoring, and if labor lasts longer than 12 hours we’ll start pitocin.” – OB to mother.
It says something about most of the entries we get on this site when I see this one and think, “It could be worse.”

Doc, I’m confused. What’s natural about anything you’ve said? And have your read ACOG guidelines about fetal monitoring and ambulation in labor? I didn’t think so. Guess I am 100% welcome to go seek a doctor who practices evidence-based medicine. See ya!

Number one… that’s not a natural birth.
Number two… it’s cruel to make Mom nervous by placing unrealistic expectations on her.
Number three… no two women birth the same. It’s not a one size fits all kind of thing.
Number four…the word “attempt” really shouldn’t be used in regards to birth.
Number five… shoving your fingers inside the vagina every two hours is a great way to increase the risk of infection, which is a great way to increase the need for a c-section. (But that seems to be your angle here.)
Number six… keeping a woman tied down to the bed through monitoring is also a great way to increase the chances of a section. Again, that seems to be an angle.
Number seven… you’re an ass.
The end.
The end.

I am sooooooo sick of this idea so many health “care” providers have that labor has to be short to be normal. Or maybe what they’re really thinking is that it has to be short to be acceptable to them, and what’s normal or not doesn’t matter. Healthy, normal labors come in all different lengths. Quit imposing arbitrary limits on it!

Here’s the logic: catastrophic things can happen during labor, so if we shorten labor, then we shorten the window of time during which something catastrophic can happen.
It makes total sense, right?
Now let’s translate it to other situations:
- something catastrophic can happen while you’re driving to work, so double the speed at which you drive and you’ll halve the time you’re in the car and therefore reduce the time when something catastrophic can happen.
- cooking fires are the #1 cause of fires in the US, so when you’re frying something, turn the heat up as high as it can go so you’ll fry things in half the time and therefore reduce the time during which something catastrophic can occur.

God forbid you have a healthy baby! It’s all about you!

No, honey. Most of the time a natural birth increases the chances of a healthy baby and mom. So say the statistics, anyway.

None of the OB’s suggestions for labor are required to ensure a healthy baby, and in fact studies show they only increase risks. I had none of these for my last 2 births and my kids are perfectly healthy! My decision to have none of those was for my and my baby’s health, not for some selfish desires. You totally don’t understand natural childbirth.

Do you have statistics showing that routine (in the absence of any complications) continuous fetal monitoring shows improved outcomes over intermittent fetal monitoring?
Do you have statistics showing that routine (in the absence of any complications) pitocin-augmented labors (after only twelve hours of labor) are safer for the baby?
We’re all about safe and healthy babies. That’s WHY we refuse some of these interventions as routines. When they’re necessary, we’re all about having them. Read the quote: these were routine interventions performed on every woman regardless of necessity.

What Jane said! (I remember JR he is a doctor and a rather stupid one at that.) JR, if my labor lasts 12 hours but I’m at 9 cm when I hit the 12 hour mark, and I was at 7 cm two hours ago, do I still require pitocin? Think before you pound that keyboard in disgust. The devil is in the details and if you don’t pay attention you make an ass of yourself.

Because vaginal checks, monitoring and pitocin augmentation will 100% guarantee that I have a healthy baby right? No babies or moms dies in the hospital as a result of birth complications if they have those things? it’s a 100% success rate? Great! Sign me up.
…no? it’s not? Darn getting my hopes up, I was hoping there really was a foolproof way to have a healthy baby. Might as well just make myself as comfortable as possible then.

Wow…this OB’s head would have exploded at my intermittent monitored, no VEs unless I asked, no pitocin 34 hour homebirth. JR, if you want people here to actually take you seriously, do some research and getback to us when you actually have a clue what you’re talking about.

Then I would be home as long as possible, and if I was already at the hospital I would say I want to go home even if AMA
