“Just Suck Up & Deal With It.”
“Just suck up and deal with it. ” – Midwife to mother at 13 weeks of pregnancy, when the mother stated she had a vaginal yeast infection.
You see, one of the reasons I am paying your bill is because you are supposed to be giving me advice on HOW to safely “deal with it”.

This is mine.
I made this appointment with her to receive treatment for my yeast infection.
I waited 40 mins in the waiting room, then I was brought into the office, 20 mins later she walked in.
And She said “so whats wrong with you?”
I explained that I was having yeast infection symptoms.
She rolled her eyes, and said “just go get the over the counter medication”
When I explained I had tried that already and I had such a horrific burning reaction to it, that I was brought to tears and had to wash it out.
She the came up with this gem “Then you are just gonna have to suck it up and deal with it”
I was shocked at her callousness and asked “I’m going to have to have a yeast infection for the rest of my pregnant?” (Picturing that burning for 9 months) She then said in a matter of fact tone “Yes” and then turned and left the office. I was floored.

Wow. I got some pretty bad lack of care in my pregnancy, but that’s just insane. At least when I had severe constipation and haemroids the doctor half heartedly suggested a few natural things.
I hope you were able to find some infomation about natural treatments and didn’t suffer for the rest of your pregnancy!

I hope you got this straighten out. That can be miserable. I have a lovely PA who works with me every time I can’t tell if it is a yeast infection or a UTI. Usually it is a UTI but the Rx treatment for that can make a yeast infection worse. It is nice that monstat is now available over the counter, but sometimes that means you end up treating the wrong thing! Very frustrating! If she had tested your urine and done a culture she could have actually been helpful. What an ass!

Now they even have OTC tests to see if you have an infection. But since OP was at a clinic, the midwife really should have made sure it wasn’t a UTI. They can cause miscarriage/preterm labor or kidney infection if left untreated. This was absolutely negligent. OP, I really hope you got the help that you needed. If yeast is a recurrent problem for you, there are dietary changes that can help lower the amount of yeast in your body and prevent infections from ever happening. They mostly suggest cutting out white flour and sugar. I’ve known a few women who had good success with the diet and stopped their yeast and thrush infections.

It could also have been bacterial vaginosis (sp?) which has similar symptoms to a yeast infection – for the midwife to not do a vaginal culture to find out is inexcusable! I had a yeast infection early on in my current pregnancy (following a round of antibiotics for strep throat, it was a fun first trimester), and even though my OB was pretty sure it was yeast and not bacterial because of the antibiotics, he did a culture anyway. For her to not even try to accurately diagnose you is crazy.

And BV can cause preterm labor – it happened to me. I had my son at 31 weeks because of it. To ignore a woman with a vaginal infection, no matter what you think it may or may not be, is completely horrific.

I had one for three months with my first. It was the first time I had a yeast infection and had no idea what was going on. I emailed my midwife and she said just go get some over the counter stuff. What? Over the counter stuff for what? Anyways I found another midwife that actually new how to get rid of it (gentian violet and diet). I even went to the doctor twice for it. No OTC or prescription would work.

Also I’m pretty sure the OTC stuff says to ask a doctor before use if pregnant. I know Monistat does on their website. So it makes sense to do so.
For anyone who has had problems like this during pregnancy – grapefruit seed extract is amazing. Take it in lemonade 2x daily.

My daughter, who is still in diapers, has a similar (red, burning) reaction if I use Monistat cream to treat a yeast diaper rash. It is clearly possible to react badly to the stuff.

I’m allergic to all of the OTC topical antifungals. Found that out the hard way. So I’ve become an expert on home remedies. Currently using boric acid, though I’d only recommend that for non-pregnant adults.

One of the biggest things that helped with thrush before we could be seen (My kids seem it get it on Friday nights, lol.) was rinsing the effected area with baking soda water.

Why not plain yogurt?

Because obviously she is whining. I mean, why does the midwife need to know that?
Oh, wait…

Better yet is garlic pills or garlic on a string. Clears it up fast!
