“Are You Sexually Active?”
“Are you sexually active?” – ER doctor to mother in the Emergency Department for suspected ectopic pregnancy, after 4 previous miscarriages.
Stop treating the chart and look at the patient.

Actually, this would be a case of “stop just looking at the patient and READ THE CHART”. You kinda need both elements to treat someone.

But I didn’t say(type) READ the chart. I said stop TREATING the chart. Checking off the boxes is not THE most important thing. Listening and connecting the dots would be a better approach.
I could have just written DUH! I’m sure this was the first question of this robot’s mouth. They don’t ask if you are sexual active if you get in a car accident. The moron should have known from the why are you here answer, but he(she) was just reading the list of questions on the ob/gyn chart. And not thinking. We pay doctors to think. They are supposed to be experts at it.

@Details: YES YES YES. This should be written in very large letters on the inside front cover of every textbook and posted at the front of every classroom. Online teaching should have this as the background graphic.

A woman can get pregnant w/o sex, so I don’t see a problem with this one.

While you are right, mom could have had repeated miscarriages from artificial insemination, that would be in the chart too as pertinent medical history.
I agree this is probably a question of reading off a checklist, and I would probably preface it with “I have to ask all of these, even though I already know the answers” (I don’t work in the medical field, but I do work in social services)

This one’s mine. I realize it was a “checklist question” and that it’s not nearly as bad as a lot of stuff here. It just caught me off-guard. My husband was right next to me and we’d already covered the fact that this was my fifth pregnancy.
Unfortunately, it was a heterotopic pregnancy and my tube ruptured sometime that next day. I had emergency (open) surgery on New Years Eve and am just over 7 weeks post-op.

Physically, I’m almost back to normal. I was made to take 6 weeks off of work so now I’m having to build those muscles up again but that’s nothing too big. The incision and tube area hurts from time to time. I asked about that yesterday at my final follow-up and was told it was just the scars thinning and becoming stronger.
Emotionally, it’s a long road, but it’s been made longer by my prior losses. It’s so hard to fathom that I’ve lost six babies.
If you are interested, I’ve been blogging about my journey for a few years. I told the full story of the twin on Jan 14th. http://augiesjourney.blogspot.com/

No, I’m not. I don’t know how this keeps happening.

As I said to my parents when they told me mom was pregnant with my fourth sibling, “It’s not just kissing, you two are doing something to make this happen…”

I was 7 and a half when they told me that I was going to be a sister. Again. I already had a 5 year old brother, a 3 year old sister, and a 1.5 year old brother. And mom was pregnant again… Needless to say I was more “Is this a JOKE?” than “YAY!”
Now that I’m nearly 30, I STILL think they were crazy to have kids so close together, but hey, we turned out okay, so I guess it’s not the end of the world.
