“Hold On, It’s Doing It Again.”
“Hold on, it’s doing it again.” – L&D Nurse to another nurse in the hallway who had stopped to talk about American Idol while the newborn with breathing troubles was being transfered to the NICU. Nurse proceeded to slap the baby on his back.
This one is mine. I was walking down the L&D hall to my client’s room when I saw these two nurses standing at the nurses station. The baby was crying but obviously struggling with something. I stood there watching as the two nurses gossiped about American Idol and witnessed this horrible action. I wrote down both nurses names and reported them to the shift manager as well as the Hospital administration and state nursing board. I have only seen the hands off nurse since.

Most of the entries on this site just make me intellectually angry; this one makes me physically ill. Thank you for reporting them, those babies need good people like you to speak up for them.

I am horrified at this entry, and SO SO glad you reported them. As a mother who hopes that, should my baby ever need someone to advocate on their behalf when I’m not there, someone like you will BE there – THANK YOU!

This entry is just so, so very sickening! I was truly expecting to see the explanation as a nurse or OB talking about a contraction monitor picking up a contraction or something instead of paying attention to the mother, but this is just terrible =[ Thank you so very much for reporting this!!!

Oh geeze… This is wrong on so many levels. Please make with the pink link that says the baby did fine and is a healthy (insert age here) and being cute this very moment, and the nurses got fired and every one else gets to be happy ever after… plz?

I’ve got to pick my jaw up off the floor…
I’m not sure what to say to this. Complete incompetence. (S)he doesn’t understand what “breathing troubles” and “NICU” mean. Some training/rehiring is in order here. I hope the other nurse (I’m guessing (s)he was the OP) reported this.

I have never been more appalled. I have read a ton of these and often feel angry or annoyed, but this takes the cake. This is awful. Thank you for reporting that person. I hope they don’t let her do any profession that involves others lives again.

IT? Is doing IT? And if it’s AGAIN, ie you know there is a problem, WTH is that not your priority?

Okay, where are all those doctors, etc. NOW who are so pro-hospital birth? Huh? Where are you? Right–you only comment on things where you can make it sound like a dissenting *opinion.* Cowards.
This is awful, Jessica–thank you for going so far in making sure this lady got in trouble.

Exactly, I guess there were no big words to explain! Except for to the nurse. Going to the NICU doesn’t mean hanging around the hallway where people are walking through in their street clothing. And was the mother of this baby told she couldn’t have “it” because the baby needed to be in a clean and controlled place. But where the heck are those doctors who should be calling security to escort nurse slappy out the front the door?

Ok this one really doesn’t get to me at all. When I was a teen I had to be in the children’s ICU for about a week or so when I was recovering from a brain hemmorage. There were alot of babies in there at least 5 and they were all premature or had been born with something wrong, most had problems breathing. The nurses HAD to literally hit their backs fairly hard to get the stuff in their lungs to break up enough to get it out. If they didn’t do this those babies would have been sicker much longer or died. Now I don’t agree with what she said when she did that but still.

Did they have to hang out in hallways while the nurses transporting them gossiped about TV shows? Because that is *much* more a concern than how she managed to resuscitate little ‘it’ when ‘it’ dared to interfere in her chit-chat.

I see what you’re saying, but I think the back-hitting was the least of our horror–the problem is the nurse standing around talking while ostensibly transporting this baby to the NICU, and the implication by her words (doing it AGAIN) that the baby’s had more than one breathing issue on route.

If this baby was headed to the NICU for breathing difficulties, most likely this baby was not getting the ideal amount of oxygen to support *it’s* survival. I’m guessing the babies already in the NICU who had this issue were already on respiratory support and monitoring. If the baby can safely loiter in the hall with a stranger then why is the baby not with thier family?

As both a former OB nurse and a NICU mama, this one really felt like a punch in the stomach. As a nurse, I am appalled at the lack of any sort of professionalism or competence. As a mama, tears come to my eyes when I read of someone showing no concern at all for this sweet little child who needed help. And for his mama who put her trust in this woman to help her precious baby. I hope she didn’t witness this scene.

grrr should read “I’m so so sorry this happened to you and your baby”. I didn’t realize my keyboard “froze” for a second and didn’t type that out.
