Thoughtful Thursday! “…I Was On The Floor.”
“I once had a woman, completely naked all through labor, leaning over the bed. I was catching poop and the baby all at the same time. Oh, and I was on the floor.” – OB during an interview, when asked if the OB was open to different birthing positions.
The only thing that could make this cooler would be the addition of ” . . . while drinking a glass of water and having a nearby puppet sing the national anthem.”

I don’t get it. I’m not getting a warm and fuzzy that about this ob’s willingness to share another woman’s compromising positions. I would rather just hear “not a problem” than anything to do with poop or pee. “Only 1/3 of my patients deliver on their backs.” That one would have made me happy. The tone must have been wonderful since the OP liked it. If I had asked about positions and been told about naked and poop it would have made me question the Dr.’s listening skills. But I guess he/she was just so excited that it made up for it.

I’m kind of with you on this one. On the one hand, I love the sentiment that the OB isn’t afraid to do what it takes to make sure her patients can deliver in the most comfortable position for them, but on the other hand, it really wasn’t necessary to share details of catching poop and what state of undress the woman was in. She could have said, “I had one woman laboring while standing over the side of her bed while I was on the floor.” And that would’ve been more than sufficient. Or, she could’ve said something like, “I encourage my patients to move around and try different positions in labor and I will work with whatever makes Mom most comfortable.”

To me the level of candor is what is reassuring. This is an OB who is obviously comfortable with normal, physiologic birth in all its glory.
I know if a doc said this to me I would know that I could bring up questions that I might otherwise find embarrassing or gross because the doctor had indicated their willingness to “go there.”

i’m also reassured, maybe he already checked with that mom to make sure it was ok to tell her story! My hubby describes labor with my first as “he’d come in, look, say “not ready” then leave.” even when i asked to get up, the nurses kinda just ignored me and would just lay me back down on my back where it was convenient for them….
#2 my DH remembers because “The Dr just sat down on the lower part of the bed and let her move around, and never left the room from when we talked about being ready to push until the baby was born.”
This was while i tried laying on each side, squatting, and hands and knees, as well as a knees and holding the back of the bed variation
and the Dr said “nimble little thing aren’t you?” to my 212lb pregnant self

Was the submitter interviewing MY doctor?! Lol. Except I didn’t poop.

On the contrary, mentioning the pooping will only make people more comfortable in the end. If you’re nervous that you will poop, wouldn’t you rather know that 90% of women do? When I was pushing and kept pooping I was able to ignore it because I knew it was normal and everyone had seen it happen before.
