“Questions?”
“Questions?” - OB’s only words upon entering the exam room for a 16 week prenatal.
Mother replied that she had lower back pain.
“Yeah, things are going to hurt and it is only going to get worse.” – OB before turning and walking out of the room.
My OB was similarly A-hole-ish. He insisted I was overreacting to the back pain. Turns out I had two nerves compressed by my L5-S1 disk and had major surgery 3 months after delivering to remove the disk and shave the vertebrae to give the nerves room. Nothing like a thorough doc. Hope you found a new and better provider…hopefully one who actually gives a crap about patients and not just about how many charts he can push through and bill in a day. :S

i got a similar run around from one OB in the local practice- but it was mid back pain on one side. 2 weeks later, when i couldnt sleep, drive, sit, work or breathe without pain (and i usually just tried a tylenol or ibuprofen and a rice bag, figured it was normal) i began to fear it was a kidney stone or something, and saw a different OB when i went it because i was sure it was pregnancy related. He actually ran the urine test for a kidney infection- just in case- then came in and spent several minutes feeling my back until he figured it out.
My rib was out of place. 3 days on vicodin and i relaxed enough for long enough for it to get back where it was supposed to be. Glad we had it fixed at 23 weeks instead of waiting for birth ya know?

Also, when I asked my doctors the question “What is labor like?” (first time mom) the doctor would always say, “OH! They explain all that at your X week visit.”
When I would reach that visit, the answer I got would be repeated. I was told “Next time” until it was two weeks until my due date.
At my 38 week appointment, the doctor answered his personal cell phone TWICE during my visit, and then when I asked him, he said, “You should really take a childbirth class,” and LEFT!!! All that after he made me wait for over an hour and a half in the waiting room past my appointment time.
He also knew full well that the only childbirth class offered by the hospital started FOUR weeks before the woman’s due date. So I had no chance to take it. And no money to pay for it even if I had the time.
In short, rude doctor, and no answers. And no, I didn’t get any answers until I experienced labor.
I’m not the OP, but I can totally sympathize.

I am sorry. That is terrible that they promised to answer your question and never did.
In our area we have a group called Birth Circle that meets once a month to discuss pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum issues. It’s *free* and we always try to make time for pregnant women to ask questions. I wish all communities had something like this!

There are also online groups which are GREAT resources for moms and moms to be! Even though my OB is excellent, it was so helpful hearing labor and birth stories from a bunch of different moms. It really helped relieve my fears and gave me confidence!

I am hoping to see the pink link on this one. The doctor did no exam at all? That is just crazy. What is the sense in going to an appointment at all if this is the extent of it?

But if the nurse checked her blood pressure, weight and urine and those all came up normal… The truth is there isn’t much to do in a normal pregnancy. All the more reason not to keep mom waiting for 1.5 hours. I mean fundal height would be nice, but if everything looks normal is there any real reason the nurse can’t check it all when the doctor is running late and tell her that if she has no questions for the doctor she can go home rather that sit in the waitingroom and make a big pretense of it all? Then again I think all OB’s should be in partnership with at least one CNM. A normal pregnancy isn’t an emergency or even an emergency waiting to happen. A lot of people just seem to think if you miss an appointment that bad luck will come find you and you better be an obient patient.

My question to the doc: “Why are you such an a******?”
Reminds me of a friend whose (now ex-) husband said to her, while she was in labor, “Well, you knew this was going to hurt.” When I heard that story, I knew I had to have my own divorce papers drawn up and put into my hospital bag. JUST IN CASE. : )

“Hello, Insurance Company? I’m really confused because I went to see my OB, and s/he didn’t actually perform an exam. She came into the room, asked if I had any questions, and then left. No fundal height, no palpation, no nothing. Did you get billed for that? Because I don’t think that’s really prenatal care, do you? Do you have a written list of the things that are supposed to happen during a prenatal visit? Isn’t there supposed to be some kind of preventative care…? I mean to keep down costs in case something goes wrong later…? Yeah, I’ll hold.”

I had to make a similar call after I registered with the hospital for this delivery and they asked me for my credit card in case my insurance refused to pay for a 2 day stay when we have this baby. Ummm I’m with a midwife if all goes well I plan on laboring at home as long as possible then coming to the hospital and they will release me about 3-5 hours after. Why am I being billed for 2 days?

Yes, one of my FORMER ob/gyns had the same bedside manner. I’d wait an hour past my appointment time and she’d come in and basically do nothing. I never knew why she was always running so far behind until one day I heard her on the phone with the contractors doing a renovation on her house for about a half hour while I was waiting in the waiting room for my appointment. I only stayed with her as long as I did because they PA that worked with her was excellent. The PA eventually got frustrated and left the practice, and then so did I.

I’ve heard this kind f thing so much, it seems almost standard. Which is why it pisses me off so much that after I risked out of my home birth at 39 weeks because of pre-e, the OBs kept saying I’d gotten “no pre-natal care” under my DE midwife. I wanted to scream at them: I got a hell of a lot better care than I would have gotten under you! Besides the normal testing, measuring and palpating, my midwife would spend on average an hour and a half talking to me about how I was feeling physically, emotionally, spiritually… We’d discuss my diet, my fears, my preparations for labor, and activity level. She’d even ask DH if there were any concerns or questions he had. Show me one OB who has time to do all that! No care, indeed!

Oh look! This OB’s office hires a “warm up act” before the real dr, who is serious about his job, comes in to really address concerns! Right?
