“See, This Wouldn’t Have Happened If You Would Have Gotten The Episiotomy.”
“See, this wouldn’t have happened if you would have gotten the episiotomy.” – OB to mother, as the OB prepared to repair a tear.
What?!
Doc, they when they say hindsight is 20/20 they didn’t literally mean you should shove your head up there.
1)When you cut someone you need to repair them so by saying that by getting an episiotomy you either went to the medical school of sparkly unicorns and rainbows where every surgical intervention heals magically or you an idiot and and a liar.
2) Never ever belittle a patient.

For the birth of my first child, I had a female OB. I had requested not to receive an episiotomy and informed her that I wished to have a natural, unmedicated birth. I was at home when my water broke at 4am. I called her shortly thereafter and she told me that she was just going to sit down and eat some breakfast. “Since this is your first child, I have plenty of time,” she said.
My OB missed the birth. Our daughter was born at the hospital at 6:55am. Some random doctor was called in from the hallway to catch our child. My OB arrived in time to stitch the tearing. Upon entering the room, she put gloves on her hands and reached out her arms so one of the nurses could assist with her gown. Then she turned toward me and stated, “See, this wouldn’t have happened if you would have gotten the episiotomy.” Needless to say, I found a CNM after that and have been very pleased. We have 5 children: All born naturally.

Wow. The doctor’s comment makes even LESS sense now that you’ve given us the context. Were you even offered an episiotomy? Oy.
Sounds to me like an attempt at shaming you so you wouldn’t point out that the doctor had botched the way she handled your labor! Or at the very least, an attempt to save face in front of the nursing staff.

I am so sorry you tore, however, maybe it’s a good thing she wasn’t there. Episiotomies generally tear much farther than a natural tear would have done! I have personally seen small epis tear to 4th degrees! (into the rectum) (those were all hospital births)…tears are more of a pain to stitch, from the doc’s point of view, but you probably came out with less damage the way it worked out…Hugs to you and congrats on your large family!

You are so right. I ended up with ventouse delivery with an episiotomy. He damaged the facia at the rear and never stitched it properly. I now have a lovely rectocele coming from the episiotomy. Natural tearing is usually MUCH better than episiotomy. Of course, no tearing is better

Wait, wait, wait wait wait. You called the doc near 4am, almost 3 HOURS before the baby was born, and she didn’t make it to the birth? What kind of cracked out breakfast was she having? Did you ask her if those Wheaties were delicious? Good grief.

Doc Who Does Not Know How to Speak in Third Conditional, that is a perfectly nonsensical statement.

Plus, women have to have their *episiotomies* repaired all the time. Mine had to be surgically repaired (to this day I don’t know what the hell they did down there) about 10 months after my first son was born. After 10 months of my CNM telling me I was delusional and just needed, I kid you not, a dildo to loosen things up down there.
Ah, memories.

Well, actually the WORST part of it was that my then-husband took our baby OUT ON A DATE WITH HIS MISTRESS while I was in the aforementioned surgery. But that’s probably a story for another blog.

I was told something similar by a midwife while I was in hospital. The nurse woke me up and said she needed to check my stitches. When I said she couldn’t she said if I didn’t want them checked I should have agreed to an Epi. I pointed out to her that I was never offered one, didn’t want one and didn’t need one as the only tearing I had was internal. Funny thobg is she didn’t believe me and told the next midwife on shift I wasn’t co operating. The midwife she told this too was the one who had stitched up my internal tears.

So, you’re saying if you’d have cut me, you wouldn’t have repaired the cut…? Because that’s what it sounds like.
These “cut so you won’t tear” OBs make need to listen to themselves talk. They make no sense at all. And they accuse *us* of living in la-la land.

What wouldn’t have happened? The laceration to her genitals? **my brain just got all hurtey**
Or does the doctor mean the tearing? Because women tear behind the episiotomy all the time.
