“…You Don’t Have Enough Milk. You’re Too Small.”
She’s screaming because you’re starving her. You have to give her formula; you don’t have enough milk. You’re too small.” – L&D Nurse to petite sized mother struggling to latch on her crying baby.
No, she’s screaming because you’re giving her mother the wrong information and you mentioned the F word!

Ignorant, unhelpful and insulting. Next!

Just fyi- the breast is not a bag. The size and shape alone cannot determine how much milk the mother makes. Coming from a mother with barely A cups who has nursed 5 babies and is tandem nursing.

As another mom with micro-boobs, I too successfully nursed for over 2 years.
She porked out from 6’12″ at birth to 12’8″ at 2 months. My micro-boobs made good milk!

And I have VERY large boobs (F cup) and don’t have great milk supply – size definitely does not matter!

Same here, Stacey. I’m relatively slender (considering I’ve had 4 babies in 5 years) but have DD or E cup size. The quality of my milk isn’t very high. Rather than shaming me, my doctor advised me on latch, holding positions, and best of all, how my diet affects the quality of my milk.

And as a mother who is a F cup who has had supply issues in the past, I can wholeheartedly agree!

Yup — President of the Itty-Bitty Titty Committee here (AA cups), EBF baby number one for a year and EBFing my newborn just great so far!

Yup. Tiny boobies here. My babies would be drowning in my milk. I had plenty enough milk that I would regularly send in 200oz to the milk bank.

I agree with what you said, but the remark wasn’t about breast size, but about the size of the woman in general. I am “petite” with smaller breasts and I managed to breastfeed just fine, as well. After my sister had her youngest, we were talking on the phone and she was complaining about how her huge breast (her words) wouldn’t do the job they were created to do! Her exact words were something close to “I finally find something these humongous things are good for and they won’t even do that!” So I agree that breast size is not an indication.

Wait. If Mom is struggling with the latch, then it’s not a supply issue (unless supply is being compromised by insufficient latch). How about referring her to a competent LC who can help her with the latch instead, or, oh I dunno… looking at Mom’s nipples or Baby’s tongue and checking for tongue ties, flat/inverse nipples, pallet issues, or any other signs that may cause a poor latch?

I wonder how many women she’s told that to. In other words, either a) I’m ignorant and skipped that chapter in the textbook or b) I just want you to feed your baby to stop him from screaming so here’s a bottle of formula already.
How can you EVER get through nursing school thinking this? What the heck? Are their textbooks written in like 1950 or something?

Yup, I ended up exclusively nursing that baby for over a year. And yes, she was back to her birth weight by her first appointment, and in the 85th percentile for the whole first year.
By the way, this hospital had “We support breastfeeding” signs all over! Too bad they didn’t inform their nursing staff! She convinced my husband to give my baby formula WHILE I WAS IN THE BATHROOM!

I’m an F and have had a hard time breastfeeding my son because of supply issues. I probably wouldn’t have had such difficulty if my “breastfeeding friendly” hospital didn’t try to for e a bottle into my baby’s mouth while I was still out from a general anesthesia c section and the. Admit him into the nicu for a week because he wouldn’t take it.

whether we are talking about size of mum or the size of her breasts i have actually met more larger women who had trouble breastfeeding, so the small mum/breasts no milk, big breasts lots of milk theory doesnt pan out. and since mum is still in hospital im going to say her milk wasnt in yet? and trying to latch a screaming newborn is futile, baby doesnt know yet that breast brings comfort seriously nurse mums only been a mum (at most) a few days give her a break!

Yeah, that’s why all the Asian populations died off 100s of years ago. So many of their woman were so petite that their babies all starved, and they didn’t have formula back then to save them.
