“It Can Be Many Things, Your Bowel, Some Fat, Or Even A Baby’s Foot Sticking Through There.”
“It can be many things, your bowel, some fat, or even a baby’s foot sticking through there.” - Nurse to mother being seen for an umbilical hernia.
Uhm. This is mine. I was at about 18 weeks along. The hernia was bigger than I think the foot could be. I was fine with the fat, and the idea that it could be the bowel, but really…a baby’s foot stuck there for weeks? I’d had a few sonograms, no issues with body parts going through my uterus and belly button. It would have to go through so much to get there. It was a pretty dismissive tone also as I was sent there by my midwife since it was hurting me so much, and I was seeking to know if there was anything I could do not necessarily surgery. It would pop out and be very difficult to get back in. The first thing the nurse said was, “I don’t know why you pregnant women get sent here anyway, we’re not going to do any surgery.” Then she said the above.

Yeah since surgery is always the ONLY option….. I hate when they don’t even offer other advice. I have to wonder if they just don’t know or they are just withholding that info cause that won’t make them any money. I’m sorry dawn. I experienced something similar (albeit not so rude) when I was pregnant. I had a hernia that didn’t bother me except while pregnant and was pretty much told there was nothing we could do and suck it up. So I feel your pain.

I don’t know a darn thing about umbilical hernias, but I do know that sometimes nurses need to keep their mouths shut and let the doctor do the diagnosising. Maybe the midwife should have sent you to someplace that actually had an answer rather than this place that obviously doesn’t. It seems really odd that this nurse feels innudated with moms with a problem that they obviously don’t have a great repution of solving.

Since looking this one up (And having the top google choice crash my on-line connection.) I now know that you either do surgery – mostly after the birth or you wear a binder and maybe still have surgery after the birth. Just tell your midwife to skip this office and recommend the binder because this office is full of fools. Were they sending you to an OB or were they sending you to whatever type of surgeon fixes hernias in men? I will probably do some more research when my computer is in a better mood!

Doc that does surgery for hernias. I want to be more informed as to my options. It appears he uses mesh and laproscopy. He didn’t tell me risks or anything, just said, “we’ll see you about 4 weeks after the baby is born.” I think he does all that explaining then and sets up the surgery. I am not sure I will go that route.

ok..confused.. i have an umbilical hernia, and that is all fact.. the only way I could see this as being offensive is if mom wasnt pregnant.. kwim? I was told it was a possibility when I am pregnant that if my hernia is larger for a baby foot to poke out… same with fat and bowels..
