“Well, If You HAVE To Keep Feeding It…”
“Well, if you HAVE to keep feeding it, I guess you can have this instead.” – Pharmacist when asked for cold and flu medication that is safe for breastfeeding.
Did you just call my baby “it” and imply I should stop feeding her?

That was exactly my reaction! I couldn’t decide which aspect of that comment to get angry about first.

Well, because everyone knows how easy it is to just use infant formula. That’s probably what he meant by “keep feeding.” The “it” part I’m not so sure…

if i don’t feed my BABY isn’t that child endangerment?

see now, i tend to make some pretty horrible jokes about my kids…. like i hold out the baby to my husband and say “could you hold this for me?” LOL….. but its a longstanding joke around here now, and i think half the time it was convincing hime to hold her when she was very small and he was rather uneasy with it. but i get to make jokes about my kids. you don’t.

Im almost certain this was a tongue-in-cheek sarcastic comment. Probably actually meant to poke back at the pharmacist for the mistake in the first place.
That said, in the first week post-partum, I was so out of it, I’m sure I wouldn’t have recognized, let alone appreciated, the sarcasm.

This was mine, and is only the second half of the submitted conversation with the (40-something FEMALE) pharmacist.
On requesting cold & flu meds that were breastfeeding safe, her first response was to give me a box of tablets, and say “Well, you’ll just have to stop feeding the baby while you take them.”
I reminded her that I required BF safe, she heaved a huge sigh, reached for the (noticeably cheaper) nasal spray and came out with the post above. It was definitely not a poorly timed joke or sarcasm.
Was tempted, but didn’t, ask what formula company had a marketing agreement with her chemist…

Either that, or she never nursed her children, so she doesn’t see what the big deal about using formula is. Kind of like saying, “It’s right over *there.* Just get over yourself and buy it already.” Gag.

I don’t normally like to make sweeping generalizations, but in my experience, many women who would never dream of breastfeeding and formula fed their own kids really just don’t get what it takes. They expect that you can just stick boob in baby’s mouth, feed it, give it a bottle any old time and then pick up where you left off with no one the wiser. So I’m guessing she didn’t see what the fuss was about since ou could “just” feed the baby formula while you had a cold and it would have been fine later.
Either that or she really didn’t want to check to see if the ingredients were breastfeeding safe and just wanted to shut you up. There are a few tablets that are safe but she couldn’t be fussed to find them.

Calling the baby “it” aggravates me, too. But what really gets me is the “If you HAVE TO…”. When are people going to understand that some mom’s WANT to breastfeed their children. We should be passionate about motherhood. It should be our desire to mother the way our bodies were meant to.

“Well, pssshhhh, if you don’t WANT to endure the discomfort and potential infection of suddenly weaning your baby and the upheaval caused by the baby suddenly being asked to eat something unfamiliar from something unfamiliar and the additional expense of formula from now until ‘it’ starts solids, pffft, GOL, I GUESS I’ll LET you have the cheaper medicine. Some people are SUCH special snowflakes and this is SO going on Customers Suck, just so you know.”

yes pharmacist i want mastitis on top of my cold im just a sucker for punishment!!! why is the assumption always that we HAVE to breastfeed and dont do it out of choice, and can just stop at anytime?
i personally have just suffered through my colds only taking paracetemol when it gets really bad and using euclyptus oil to help with the breathing but i do that whether im breastfeeding or not
my husband does often say “here hold this” referring to our son… if anyone other than my husband referred to my child as an object i would flip, (even when hubby does it i say excuse me hold what now?

Um…yes, that is what you do to keep your child alive. Sorry, but there just aren’t any pills for that yet. *rolls eyes*
