“Are You Ready For Some Advice, Or Do You Want To Push Your Way For The Rest Of The Day?”
“Are you ready for some advice, or do you want to push your way for the rest of the day?” – OB to mother during pushing.
Condesending much? Unless this person is going to tell mom to get off her back and grab on to the swat bar, just save it!

Is it really so hard to say this in a nice way? “May I suggest a way of pushing that might make this easier for you?” This doctor could be so close to that without the snark in his/her tone.

I have a feeling, though, that this may have been said as the woman just *started* to push, having waited for the involuntary urge, and thus was not even close to needing advice on how to “speed things up.”

Exactly, Heather P! I like how the doc even used the word “advice” but the tone and the rest of the sentence just ruin it. Suggestions and advice aren’t bad, but condescension at any time is not cool.

If this was a male OB, it’s exceptionally annoying. Have you ever pushed an object the size of a grapefruit out of an opening the size of a lime? NO? Then shut up and let me do this my way!

THANK YOU for using realistic terms, rather than referring to baby as “the size of a watermelon!”

Haha, agreed, although, both *my* babe’s heads were noticably bigger than a grapefruit! Maybe small cantalope? Pineapple?

Ok, just had a visual of a pineapple coming out of a woman’s vagina and all I could think was “OOOOWWWWWW!!!!”

Interesting how women pushed babies out while in twilight sleep for years with no one instructing them on anything- but now we all need to do it “their way.”
The sad thing is that sometimes we do need some input, but for the most part, our bodies know what to do. However, it takes longer to wait and let a woman’s body push her baby out naturally. That requires patience.
I had a baby a week and a half ago and it took 35 minutes to push her out. It probably could have been done in about 10 if my midwife hadn’t stepped back and let me push my own way, rather than rush things along and yell at me until I did things “her way.”
And let me just say that it was the most pleasant birth experience I have ever had. It was so calm and peaceful.

This reminds me of the annoying nurse I had. She had been telling me to stop closing my eyes, and to “focus away from the pain, away from the pain, don’t think about the PAIN!” (Like saying that is going to help??) I had been ignoring her and listening to my husband and doula. At one point she said, “Do you want some advice?” And I was like, “NO!” So she said “Fine” or something and left. Now I wonder what she was going to say. I really hope I don’t have to birth in a hospital again, but if I do and our nurse is anything but wonderful, I plan to ask to switch right away.

Because those are the only two options. Either you listen to (and the implication is follow) the doctor’s advice, or else you push ineffectively for 24 hours. There’s NOTHING in between.
