“…You Are Putting Your Baby At Risk For Lifelong Problems…”
“If you don’t do the Vitamin K shot, you are putting your baby at risk for lifelong problems, like cerebral palsy.” – Pediatrician.
Mine again! Same one as earlier today telling me about all of the “bad bacteria” I had. Like I said, either he really had no idea what “normal” treatments are really for, or he thought I was too stupid to explain them properly. Either way, he is NOT coming anywhere near my kids.

LOLWUT?
This is that special breed of docs who think the white coat means they can say anything. Which means it’s time for a little xkcd.

For the love of all things pure and holy! What on earth does vitamin k and cerebral palsy have to do with one another?

Vitamin K is given for one solitary reason–to reinforce the clotting process in the unlikely event of bleeding in the brain. Bleeding in the brain is one of the things that can cause cerebral palsy. In that respect, the doctor’s association was correct, however his risk weighting is ridiculous.
Vitamin K deficiency occurs in something like 1/100,000 newborns. Even then, bleeding might not occur unless other risk factors are present. Hardly necessitates a painful shot for every baby. Why they don’t give an oral dose or allow the bf mother to take K supplements is beyond me.

The hospital pedi really didn’t like that I declined the vitamin k shot, opting instead for the oral & breastfeeding. But he stated that it was given to prevent bleeding in the brain, true, and while not happy he respected my decision.
