Thoughtful Thursday! “…Let Me Know When You Are Having A Contraction So I Can Stop Talking.”
“You let me know when you are having a contraction so I can stop talking. You do what you need to. I will wait.” – Anesthesiologist to mother while going over the procedure to have an epidural placed.
The hospital midwife with my youngest sons birth had to ask the anesthesiologist to be more careful because I was contracting. I was stuck several times and the midwife was just as annoyed as I was. She wasn’t yelling (b/c that would have made thinks far more stressful) but she was VERY clear that she did not approve of the lack of compassion. She stood there and held my hands the whole time and helped talk me through the pain the anesthesiologist was causing me.

Not sure if this one was mine, but my anesthesiologist said this to me at my first. He also said he was sorry to see me again when I was wheeled in for my c/s and got my epi in on the first try, no problem. I wrote the chief of medicine afterwards to brag on how compassionate he was.

This is me! He was really a thoughtful guy. I’ve worked as a doula too and this was the most thoughtful anesthesiologist I’ve ever met! He also was a pro he got it right the first time really kept the epi super low and came back quickly when it wore off, when he came in he listened to my sounds and said, “oh, it sounds like it’s not working.” with real concern in his voice. Many things went not the way I’s planned for this birth but I really felt cared for!

Wow, that is so nice! Unfortunately, the exact opposite of most of the anesthesiologists I’ve worked with. One was literally jerking one of my doula clients around by the chin when a contraction hit, and when I asked if he could wait until it passed he got all huffy, “If I do want for contractions, I’ll never get it done! I may as well leave and she won’t get any drugs!” Sigh….
This one is a keeper, though! I’m glad some anesthesiologists understand that laboring moms might have different needs than your average medical patient.

That’s almost word for word what mine said two minutes after he’d asked me to tell him whether I was having a contraction, and I couldn’t understand why he’d asked me that if he wasn’t going to take any notice.
