“Is He On Homo Milk Yet?”
Family Practice doctor: ”Is he on homo milk yet?”
Mother:”No, I nurse him, he won’t drink cow’s milk.”
Family Practice doctor: ”Okay, you should put him on homo milk now.”
Mother “But, I nurse him.”
Family Practice doctor: “He should be drinking homo milk.”
Mother: “Fine.”
Homo milk? Is there Hetero milk too?

it’s what they call whole milk in canada.

I would have HAD to say it: “I’m bisexual, is that close enough? I have a homosexual friend who might still be nursing, but I’m not sure.”
Then, when the jaw picked up from the floor, I’d lecture about WHO guidelines, biological guidelines, biology and lactase persistence.

I hate that so many providers are under the impression that cow’s milk is a necessary substance like iron or calcium. And mother’s milk increases in nutrients after a year, and even more after 2 years, and it is never detrimental barring rare metabolic problems. Besides the fact humans aren’t meant to drink other mammals’ milk (not against it, just pointing it out).

I would be curious to know how old the baby in question was, not that it really matters. It just might go to the doctor’s frame of mind.
You know what really bugs me about this kind of thing? The doctor… if he really believes this… should provide reasons for his insistence that Mom stops nursing and starts baby on whole milk. Without giving a reason(s) behind his thinking, he’s just being argumentative!

Agreed, and so the mother shouldn’t have said “Fine” but rather “Why?”

“Why?” might be the ideal response, but “fine” was my response when WIC told me my 6mo should only be nursing 3-5 times a day. At nearly 9mo, she’s still nursing nearly twice that. WIC gives us tons of baby food, but she prefers breastmilk to anything (except maybe cat food, but that’s another story). I think I’ll ask at our next visit in a couple of weeks.

Just so you don’t feel alone, I would like to tell you that my 17 month old daughter prefers dog and cat food to seemingly any other substance that she could possibly digest…

My mother always told me that when stupid people try to tell you how to live your life, it’s best to smile, nod, and then go do what you want.
Maybe not the best for developing a relationship with someone from whom you hope to get actual logical medical advice, but very good for getting away from idiots without making yourself crazy.

Yeah, homo milk is just what we call it here. I never knew it was called anything else. Nothing to do with sexual orientation at all. Doc’s not stupid for calling it that but IS stupid for thinking that it’s somehow superior to breastmilk.

Dear Medical Providers,
Human children, including mine, are NOT calves.
If you want to push cow’s milk on infants, switch to agricultural veterinary medicine.
My child will start drinking cow’s milk if and when I think he is ready.
Please stop insisting. I will give my child vitamin supplements if I think he needs one.
Sincerely,
Someone who gave birth to a human baby, not a baby cow.

None of my children drink much milk… because they are human babies.
They are not goat
Cows
or any other livestock animal that produces milk. . I bet this Doc would have had a heart attack too if you said “No. we own cattle, and we drink raw milk. No homo milk for us!”

And doctors wonder why we go to the Internet for advice instead of talking to them? #1 – answers on the Internet are free, #2 – the second, third, and fourth opinions are free too. #3 – It’s just about as reliable, if not more so in some cases, such as the one listed by the OP here.

Am I the only one obscurely relieved that the doctor demanded the child be fed whole milk, rather than insisting on lo-fat?

Nope, it occured to me too. Not that it’s much consulation, but it’s *slightly* better. Drives me crazy the lectures I get giving my see-all-his-ribs 3 year old whole milk because ‘he doesn’t need all that fat’. Arggg!

Ya, I never switched my kids from whole milk either. All four of them are perfectly fit, and one has the metabolism of fire, so she NEEDS all the fat she can get!

I was thinking homogenized too but ummm…either way, human milk is MADE for human babies. Not cow milk! I don’t get the logic in insisting human children *have* to drink cow’s milk. I really don’t…. (Excuse if this posted twice and with typos..I’m on my phone)

has anyone else heard about the genetically modified cows that they have or are trying to make so they produce “human” milk? I thought I read something about that a few months ago…

I’m trying to think of the logic there. “We can spend a billion dollars making cows that produce milk which approximates human milk. It’s a shame half the population isn’t born with a pair of devices which also could approximate human milk…and which activate after birth…and which work most of the time if the mom isn’t sabotaged…hmm…”

First, the ped was absolutely wrong and a baby/child who is happily breastfeeding does not need cow’s milk.
BUT, if you choose to give your toddler or preschooler cow’s milk, PLEASE give them whole milk and not low fat. If you can find the fat content in your milk, spend the money on whole milk with the highest fat content. Why? Because between birth and age 5 the human brain is growing at an astounding rate. Do you know what nerve endings are coated in? Fat! If a child under 5 is not getting enough healthy fat in their diet, the growth of their brain is restricted. So yes, they DO need all that fat!

I have heard that the homogenization is what gives so many people issues with lactose intolerance. If that’s the case, why risk giving your kids tummy troubles and keep on with the boob juice? Some doctors!

Pasteurization is what causes lactose intolerance because it denatures the natural lactase in the milk. Homogenization is pretty bad too though.

Similar from my dr at my sons one year check up… “Is he on whole milk”
“No”
“He needs at least 8oz of whole milk a day, your milk is not sufficient and is drying up. That’s why he nurses so much”..
*almost* offered to “show” dr that my milk was NOT dried up.. as I could still squirt across the room with a well placed squeeze! LOL

Yeah… my last WIC visit was an exercise in circular logic.
WIC chic: “He needs the fat in whole milk for brain development”
Me: “He’s still nursing”
WIC chic: “Yeah, but he needs whole milk”
Me: “Breast milk has a higher fat content than whole cows milk”
WIC chic: “Well, he still needs whole milk”
Me: “Why?”
WIC chic: “For the fat.”

Oh, don’t get me started on WIC!
Was forced (or not get the checks of course) to get my sons blood tested for iron deficiency when I refused to give him the cereal at six months. BLW and we don’t do the cardboard laced with chemicals crap anyway.. They said my milk couldn’t “possibly” be keeping him in enough iron. I tried (in vain) to explain the way iron/breastmilk works.. She was shocked to see that not only was his iron at an acceptable number, he was in the HIGH range of normal!
Another time Had my GP tell me he would need to go on iron supplements when I was deathly anaemic and refused to stop nursing.. of course.. when they told me I was so deathly ill my FIRST move was to call his ped and have his iron tested THAT NIGHT.. I was at the drs office within half an hour of being told I was so sick. Again, his iron was in the HIGH side of normal. The GP was NOT concerned (in that moment, when that statement was made) about my iron being affected by nursing… just that he couldn’t possibly be getting enough iron if mine was so low!
It bothers me that these “professionals” who are in charge of “educating” parents (WIC workers are called “WIC EDUCATORS here!).. and they know so LITTLE about these things.
I am all the time printing things out and taking them in to our educators.
BLW, Jaundice and formula (was told MULTIPLE times that I HAD to do formula to remove the jaundice by WIC!), Iron, Fat, Weight Gain, Weight charts etc.
I have taken in REAL Breastfeeding baby charts and while my son was still on the lower end he wasn’t falling off the end of the chart that they were using!
They didn’t take into consideration that I was on an IV and had nursed before he was weighed so both of those would have resulted in a higher weight on the scale that was not a “true weight”.
Just changed to another WIC building entirely.. just wish that my chart saying that I argue with them about so many things lol
Hoping for a “better” educator this time!

Wondering how old this baby is – not that it makes a lot of difference. This doctor-person is still behaving in a way that is ignorant and arrogant and not in the least bit professional.
