“…I Understand Why You Are Throwing In The Towel.”
” Oh, it’s OK. I understand why you are throwing in the towel.” – L&D Nurse to mother who agreed to a repeat cesarean after a long, non-progressing labor and a very unsupportive staff.
Well, “Thoughtful Thursday” is definitely over.

BTW, moms who have a cesarean aren’t failures. They didn’t throw in the towel. They are making the best decision possible during a terrible situation. If the medical staff has provided medicine for the convenience of the hospital…if the doctors were never around and the L&D nurses had too many moms to provide adequate care…if the hospital policies left the mother weak and unable to properly labor…if the mom’s labor supports are undermined at every term…yes, we moms do feel like failures when that happens. But we’re not.
It’s the hospital system who failed this mom.

Well, nurse, I’m glad that you understand that it’s because of YOU and the rest of the staff here.
Not ME. I was ready, willing, and able. You undermined all those three.
OP, I agree with Jane. This was the hospital’s fault for failing to be there and take care of you properly.

Oh good. So you understand that I’M not the one who failed, but it was you and your hospital team who failed ME?

Sounds a lot like Nurse Nature Nazi at my first. While I was in post-op she told me, “It’s too bad you gave in, you know. You’ll have a hard time finding someone who’ll let you VBAC.” That’s so what I wanted to hear after 17 hours of labor and a traumatic surgery…

Yuck. Just awful. I really do think that self-control, especially control over the mouth, ought to be a major part of the assessments as to whether nurses and doctors may graduate to working directly with patients.

It was pretty awful. I was excited at first when she said she was the hospital “natural birth instructor” but by the time I was in transition she’d made it clear she was only interested in HER idea of “natural birth.” Even when I asked for help to facilitate a vaginal birth she refused to help me till I was exhausted and my son’s HR was no longer recovering after each contraction. I honestly believe she was a HUGE element in my ending up with a c/s. Not making that mistake again with this VBAC.

OP I’m so sorry this happened to you.
