Thoughtful Thursday! “…You’re A Good Candidate For A Home Birth.”
“You’ve had an easy pregnancy. You’re a good candidate for home birth.” – Nurse Practitioner to woman who shared that she had changed her plans and was now going to have a home birth.
This one is mine but I’m on my phone so I can’t pink link.
I waited until 29 weeks to make my decision. My OB’s office was nice, but I was too worried that once in a hospital setting I’d cave to drugs when I really didn’t want any. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see my OB but saw the NP instead. When she told me to schedule my next appointment I told her that I had decided to do home birth instead. I was surprised with this response. I honestly thought they’d try to talk me out of it, but they didn’t. When I went in after his birth because I had mastitis, they complemented me on my home birth as well.

Glad you got the birth you wanted! I had my first with a planned epi and the others *mostly* natural at the hospital… and I understand your concern. A couple of times I have ‘caved’ to a ‘half dose’ of narcotics at the hospital during transition… if I was a bit more patient I would have been over and done but you never seem convinced of that at the time. If I didn’t have such quick transitions/births I could have wound up being a serious pushover with the drugs.
The thing that keeps me *at* the hospital is I would be more stressed at home. When anyone besides family is in my house I go into ‘hostess’ mode… I stress out trying to make everyone *else* comfortable and happy. At the hospital I go into ‘customer’ mode… I expect them to give me what I want. Just works better for me over all.

I got this one from my Family Practice doc when I was first considering home birth at 37 weeks due to new info on a hospital policy. I was overweight and over 40 but he was fine with me home birthing.
Turned out I was able to talk to the nurse manager at the hospital and get around the stupid policy with no trouble… but it was cool to know my doc was fine with home birth. I just prefer the hospital for myself.

With #4 I had given birth standing up. My doc was cool with it, but baby came fast and doc didn’t make it to the birth. The nurses freaked and the hospital scolded my doc… they said I ‘had’ to be in the bed next time. Doc was quite apologetic but feared losing his privileges there… unless I found a way around it with the nurse manager I couldn’t stand this time.
I went to talk to the nurse manager. She thought for just a moment then took me back to one of the rooms and showed me that the bottom half of the bed could be lowered almost to the floor. If I stood or knelt on that… I was *in* the bed. Stupid policy averted without my doc getting in trouble.

I really feel bad for your doctor! How sad that he was called to the carpet for breaking such a stupid “blanket rule.” I can’t help but wonder how many more OB’s would be supportive of alternative positions and whatnot if they didn’t have to fear hospital policy.
Pretty awesome nurse for thinking outside the box!

I agree! The *only* complaint I had with the doc was that he should have told me *sooner* than 37 weeks! I’m sure he knew there would be a problem before then… I think he was afraid to tell me.
But he pointed me to the brilliant nurse and we had another great birth. Of course… poor doc stepped out for supper at 5cm and wound up missing the birth again. LOL… He was there for hours from 2/3cm to 5cm and was sure he still had time.
Once I hit 6cm… it seems like the finish line is never more than 30 minutes away. He was kicking himself so much though that I think if there is a next time he’ll be camped out in my backyard as soon as I hit 39 weeks.
