Thoughtful Thursday! “…If You Are Feeling The Urge, Push Away!”
“Of course! If you’re feeling the urge, push away!” – Certified Nurse Midwife to mother who wanted to know if she was ready to push.
What’s this? A medical professional that is allowing the mother to dictate when it’s time to push? Where’s the “you’re not 10 cm yet!” The “gotta wait for so and so to get here?” The “you can’t push until I’m counting to 10 in an obnoxious tone of voice?”
Such a novel concept! OP, I’m glad you had such supportive caregivers!

I was lucky enough to have 2 fantastic midwifes when I gave birth. I told them and needed to push and they said they’d rather I waited until my water broke but if I had to push then push. So I did, my water broke and my Lil man was out in 2 pushes. And I didn’t tear so my body was obviously ready to do it. Not bad for a first baby weighing 9 pound

Out of pure curiosity, did your midwives give you a reason for wanting to wait until your water broke before pushing? Before I became disabled, I was studying to be a midwife and I’ve never heard of anyone requesting that before.

My midwives told me they “had” to break the membranes because if they didn’t, the combined force of pushing plus a full bag of waters might bust the bag of waters and pull the placenta away from the top of the uterus and potentially cause an amniotic fluid embolism.
Okay. Potentially. I figured I was okay with that even though it sounded like nonsense. When it came time, though, I was at 9.5cm and the membranes hadn’t ruptured. The midwife I had at that point was fine with no AROM but said I’d go faster if she did it. Since labor had already been a whopping four hours long (poor me!) I said sure, break ‘em.
(The record then says 11:04 – AROM. 11:05 – birth)

I believe it was because they were sure once my water broke things were going to happen pretty quickly and I was waiting for an epidural so they wanted to buy me time if they could. But I didn’t need it in the end as it was pretty quick and I managed it without pain relief (the Dr walked in to do the epidural about 30 seconds after he was born)

My midwife said she didn’t want to break my water if she could avoid it but again that could be because they were trying to buy me time. It constantly amazes me how people in the same profession, who have therefore in theory had the same training, can treat things like this so differently.

Dislike these words.

Can I have this one next time? SO jealous!
My nurse and doctor BOTH told me I was forbidden to push when I felt the need.
