“Could You Hurry This Along, I’d Like To Go Golfing In The Morning.”
“Could you hurry this along, I’d like to go golfing in the morning.” – OB to mother in labor at 10 pm.
Not funny. Doctor probably said this as if joking, but it’s got an undercurrent of pressure on the mom that SHE is responsible for the doctor not being able to do things s/he wants to do. Despite the fact that the doctor knowingly entered a medical specialty where it’s the doctor’s job to deal with laboring women whenever they happen to go into labor.

I’d have to have a really, really good relationship with my OB to be receptive to a joke like this. If it was the one on call, for instance, I’d probably scare him out of the room for saying this! There’s a time and a place, and considering this post is here, I’m guessing it was wrong and wrong!

I’m guessing the doc was trying to joke around…but I’m sorry…if its 10pm and your laboring your probably more then tired by that point…NOT THE RIGHT TIME DOC!

This happend with my first baby and sadly he was not joking. At 10pm I had only been in active labor for five hours and when he showed up he stated that he would like to get things moving so he could go golfing in the moring. He insisted that I start pitocin, he then ordered double the amount your supposed to get and when my nurse said she didn’t feel comfortable doing that he called her an idiot infront of everyone in the room. At 11:10 I was dialated to a 9, he told me I needed to push and when my son didn’t shoot out he said that we needed to do an emergency c-section because I just wasn’t progressing and could loose my baby. At exactly midnight my son came into the world and the doctor told me there was no way I would ever give birth vaginally. Thankfully he was very wrong, my second son was born vaginally with no pitocin and a different doctor!
