As someone who has experienced a “blighted ovum” (which, by the way is a terrible name…I would rather the technical term anembrionic pregnancy), I am appalled. There is nothing “fake” about it. There was still conception and fertilization, but just never developed from there. I found out at 12 weeks that I had an anembrionic pregnancy. It was completely real to me for the 2 months I thought I was pregnant, and to assume any different is insensitive at the best of times and downright rude, no matter your personal opinion on the matter!

Crappy choice of words there. The last one was most definitely real when the test came back positive, PA.

Maybe just say Congratulations, instead of saying things like one pregnancy is more “real” than another.

My husband and I were JUST talking about this. I had a misdiagnosis of miscarriage with my third pregnancy, and before we discovered that my daughter was indeed alive, my surgeon (I had just had an appendectomy) walked into my room and cavalierly asked, “So, what ever happened with your miscarriage? Was it just a blighted ovum? My wife had one of those years ago, but a couple of months later she got pregnant for real and we had our daughter.” Part of me will never understand how some people can be so callous.

“Oh good to know that my pregnancy is “real” this time around! Such a shame your brain isn’t real, though. Oh well!”

I don’t even know how to respond to this level of stupidity!

I had a ‘blighted ovum’ too. I had horrible morning sickness for 6 weeks! It was as real as any other pregnancy I had. The miscarriage I had was real too.

So… it was a fake pregnancy, kind of like the one your momma had with you, doc?

I’m so sorry that you had someone tell you something so thoughtless. It’s also surprising that you found this out at an appointment for a later pregnancy–why wasn’t this discussed with you in the first place? I’m glad you found another provider!
