“…This Is A Real Pregnancy…”
“You have nothing to worry about, this is a real pregnancy. Not like last time, that was just a blighted ovum.” – Physician’s Assistant in OB office.
My husband and I were JUST talking about this. I had a misdiagnosis of miscarriage with my third pregnancy, and before we discovered that my daughter was indeed alive, my surgeon (I had just had an appendectomy) walked into my room and cavalierly asked, “So, what ever happened with your miscarriage? Was it just a blighted ovum? My wife had one of those years ago, but a couple of months later she got pregnant for real and we had our daughter.” Part of me will never understand how some people can be so callous.

This is mine. The PA in my OB’s office said this at the beginning of my 4th pregnancy (my 3rd was a miscarriage) when I was expressing my concern of possibly miscarrying again. The previous pregnancy being “only a blighted ovum” was certainly news to me and put me on edge until I was able to hear a heartbeat!
Happy to say I switched to a midwife about 2 weeks later, because of this conversation as well as many differences of opinion on how my birth should go.

I’m so sorry that you had someone tell you something so thoughtless. It’s also surprising that you found this out at an appointment for a later pregnancy–why wasn’t this discussed with you in the first place? I’m glad you found another provider!

As someone who has experienced a “blighted ovum” (which, by the way is a terrible name…I would rather the technical term anembrionic pregnancy), I am appalled. There is nothing “fake” about it. There was still conception and fertilization, but just never developed from there. I found out at 12 weeks that I had an anembrionic pregnancy. It was completely real to me for the 2 months I thought I was pregnant, and to assume any different is insensitive at the best of times and downright rude, no matter your personal opinion on the matter!
