“Oh My God, It’s Breathing!”
“Oh, my god, it’s breathing!” – OB to room when baby started crying before it was completely born.
This made me laugh out loud. Really? It’s so ridiculous that so many doctors have no concept of normal birth.

Ha!
At least in this context the “it” is a bit more understandable.
The doc probably couldn’t yet see if the baby was a she or a he!

My second child, a daughter, cried when just her head was out. I was watching in a mirror, and still have the image of myself with my legs spread in stirrups, with this crying head sticking out between my legs. My husband and I, somehow assuming that because our first was a boy, the second would be also, both said “He’s crying already!” A moment later, I said “Oh, Chris, we have a little girl!” By th way, her birthday is today, and I should go call her up! (She is 37).

OMG. I honestly thought that this was going to be a story from a momma who was talked into an early induction for a baby who had passed in utero and was delivered alive, but too early to survive long outside the uterus. Pheww… glad that it was just a startled doctor and a full term baby.

Help! I didn’t really know/think that was possible? I always thought that as long as the upper body is still inside the birth canal, the lung are too squashed to breath/cry.
If that is a possibility , can it make water births dangerous? *off to research*

The baby wont start breathing until their face hits the air. Also, they are still getting oxygen from the placenta. I had a water birth with my 2nd baby, he was in the water for longer than I expected because as he was born my waters broke and the water suddenly went cloudy so my mum (who hadnt expected him to be born in 2 pushes) had to feel around in the pool to pick him up!

My daughter was screaming with only her head out. It was a bit of a surprise since my others barely cried after being fully born (they were too busy rooting lol) but pretty cool! I agree, pretty sad a doctor didn’t know it was even possible….

When I saw this I thought it was going be a sad story, but I’m glad it’s a funny one. My 3rd decided to start yelling before she was fully born and we just went with it (unassisted at home). I believe I would have asked the OB, “Well, what did you expect?”

This one is my contribution, and occurred 24 years ago. We had already had one false-alarm run to the hospital several days prior, and the OB had wanted to induce me instead of “letting” me go home. He was none too pleased that we ignored his advice and left. When we came into the hospital the 2nd time (and on a SATURDAY, no less — messed up his day off!!), I was not convinced I was actually in labor — we only came because my hubby was certain I was further along than I thought I was. I was 5 cm when we got there, and the OB was REALLY ticked off that I wouldn’t let him break my water and “speed this thing up”. He left the room in an angry huff after arguing with my husband about the amniotomy, then I had about 5 strong whopper contractions and had to push (and my water broke on its own in there somewhere too!). The OB and the nurse came flying back into the room, and as my daughter emerged, she turned her head, took a HUGE breath, and then started screaming before she was even out. It was the strangest feeling! The doctor was so startled when that happened, I thought he was going to drop her. And after he made that stupid comment, all I could think to say is, “Aren’t babies SUPPOSED to breathe?”
I later became a childbirth educator and a doula, and after seeing him at births where I was NOT the one in labor, plus seeing how strongly he pushed medication on my clients, I understood when he was so surprised by my daughter breathing and crying. I saw a lot of very drugged-up, sleepy babies from his clients.
Just glad my daughter wasn’t one of them!

Yikes, wow! Glad your husband defended you while you labored, and it’s funny but also sad that the doctor had so little experience with a normal birth.

Hehe had this happen! But I asked “what the hell is going on in there?!??” and the mid turned to me and said “she’s breathing. She’s trying to cry already but she can only blow bubbles out her nose”. I laughed my daughter out after that LOL

I’m sorry, but that’s funny. It’s sad that the OB didn’t know that could happen though.
