“If Something Went Wrong And Your Baby Died…”
“If something went wrong and your baby died you’d never forgive yourself, would you. Let’s get this monitor on.” – Midwife to mother who inquired about the need for continuous fetal monitoring.
So much for evidence based care… No good studies have found there to be better outcomes with continuous monitoring over intermittent. Only increased c-section rates.

This is mine. I’d been planning a homebirth but when my waters broke it looked like there might be a little meconium so I went to hospital to get checked out. It turned out there were a couple of timy specks of it but my waters weren’t stained or anything so I was debating going back home. The midwife came and was pretty rude and barely spoke to me, she mostly spoke to my mum and the baby’s dad and was assuming we were definitely staying in the hospital. She was getting the belt thing ready for the monitor and I said I didn’t want to be on it for long and wanted to go home. That’s when she said this, it was more about going home than about the monitor. I was so shocked, but it worked. She really scared me and sadly I ended up staying and having a terrible experience there. There’s a couple more of my submissions due to come up on here so I’ll wait til they are up to explain the whole story.

Was this the midwife you were supposed to birth with at home? If so…shocking!

No, I’m in the UK and you just kind of get whoever you’re given. Even with a homebirth you’ll only get your usual midwife if she is on shift. If not they’ll send whoever is available. I’d never met her before.

That kind of stinks.
I work with a team of three midwives, but at least I get to alter my prenatal care visits with all of them so that I’m not laboring with a complete stranger. Although I may have to guzzle castor oil the week that my favorite one is on call…;-)

“If something went wrong and your baby died, you’d never forgive yourself, would you? So let’s never drive your baby in a car. Or expose your baby to germs in a grocery store. Or walk down a set of stairs while holding her. Etc. Etc. Etc.”
SHUT UP.

I’d feel that way pretty much no matter what happened to cause my baby’s death, no matter how far it was out of my control …and that’s exactly what they prey on.
