Thoughtful Thursday! “…You Do What You Need To. I Will Wait.”
“You let me know when you are having a contraction so I can stop talking. You do what you need to. I will wait.” – Anesthesiologist to mother while going over the procedure to have an epidural placed.
I believe this was mine (I got an e-mail saying a comment of mine was being posted), but it wasn’t in preparation for placement. Upon admission while in active labor for my VBA2C, I was bombarded with questions, forms, etc. I was being bullied for answers from my nurse, who seemed to think my uterus was going to explode. I was using Hypnobabies, so keeping focused during contractions was extremely important. She didn’t seem to care, and made two failed attempts to put in an IV during two contractions. She wanted to try a third time, but I said no. She said, “We need it in case of an emergency.” I said, “Not you then get someone else.” About five minutes later, this guy came in. He asked me a million questions for the epidural I’d never get. After my first contraction with him in the room I apologized for not answering him and he said this. He then went on to get my IV in without a problem and before he left watched me through a contraction and said, “Well, it looks like this is the only time I’ll be seeing you!”

What is it with the barking nurses? They did the same thing to me when I chose to transfer during my labor Monday night when my midwife discovered my son was breech. I was at 9-10 cm and trying really hard not to push and they just kept barking orders at me.

Now, that is a lot more likely to result in informed consent and a successful placement. Good job. Now please precept students.
