“…You’re Going To Look Like The Michelin Girl By The Time You Deliver.”
“If you keep gaining weight at this rate, you’re going to look like the Michelin girl by the time you deliver.” – Midwife to mother at a prenatal appointment.
And you are going to look out of business if you talk to your clients in this way. How does this help mom? Does this give her any solutions to the weight gain (assuming it really is at a problematic level)? What about other health issues that may lead to higher than normal weight gain? Did you look for any of those perhaps?
No. You just decided to be mean and judgmental instead. Because that is what all *good* doctors do, shame people who do not have their idea of a perfect body. Jerk!
OP, I am so sorry that you were treated this way. No one deserves to be ridiculed or shamed because of their weight, race, religion, age, or sexual orientation. I hope you found a care provider who treated you with dignity.

HEY!!
I think the Michelin tire guy is cute!
Not funny
and BTW – just googled Michelin Girl and came up with skinny, big boobed girls who were at the race track Michelin was sponsoring =P

Hmm. I didn’t realize my appearance is what matters during pregnancy. Silly me, I thought gaining weight during pregnancy is normal since my blood volume increases, there’s extra fluid for the baby to float in, a placenta for his nutrition, fuller breasts, and – oh yeah!- a BABY growing inside.

Awww, don’t worry, your appearance isn’t the only thing that matters — the condition of your vagina and its ability to stimulate your sexual partners is important, too! *cringe*

Oh yeah, I forgot about my stretched out, flabby turn-off of a vagina! Silly me, I should have a C-section to preserve it for my hubby, since he’s the most important figure in this pregnancy. That nasty belly flab of mine will cover the scar!

Dear People of the World:
Despite the fact that I am pregnant it is NOT okay to tell me that I am huge, that I am carrying my baby in the back as much as in the front, that I must be having twins because I’m already SO BIG. It’s not okay to touch me without my permission, or get down in front of my belly and talk baby talk to my belly (yes, that actually happened to me). It is not okay to tell me your horrifying stories of someone whose birth went horribly wrong. It’s not okay to ask me about my birth choices and then tell me why they are all wrong. It’s not okay to ask me if I’m STILL pregnant at any time.
Just because I’m having a baby doesn’t mean you can be rude, that I don’t have feelings, or that my body is public property. Keep your opinions and your hands to yourself.

The only ones allowed to talk to my belly, touch, wave hi, etc are my husband and our 5 year old.

Starting in June with pregnancies #5 and #6 I had little old ladies REPEATEDLY saying things like “Any day now?” “You look ready to pop!!” and so on.. these things need to go on the list of not allowed to be said!! I finally got to the point I would just growl and walk away or after lying “Yup, any day now” and walking away would growl!
For the record.. the babies were both born early (36 and 36.5 weeks) in NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!!! I had GD BADLY .. especially with the last one.
It showed in my tummy.. not in their weights.. #5 was 8lbs 4 oz and #6 was 7lbs and 1/2 oz

At 19 weeks, I already look like the Michelin girl! Well, an off-white version anyway… That’s me, the Stay-Puft ROASTED marshmallow woman! Who cares? The important thing is a healthy mom and baby (and no, not being a size 2 does not make one inherently unhealthy). People who will shame others about their size/weight in an immature fashion like this do not belong in medicine.

So, gaining weight during pregnancy is a bad thing? I thought that’s what we’re supposed to do?
Sheesh.

I would be very concerned if rings begain to appear. I didn’t have the stacked tire look at all. More of the swallowed a watermelon look. Now if I put on one of those puffy coats then I could have done a great impression of a Michelin Girl, but naked or in maternity clothes I just looked pregnant.

As opposed to …Posh Spice?
Umm I thought looking rounder and rounder as the pregnancy progressed was a thing to be cherished. My med-wife tried to send me to the nutritionist for a second time and that’s when I quit her. If she couldn’t take my weight at month 4, I was afraid what she’d do to me by month 8.

No. Because Posh Spice was “too posh to push”.
