“You Need To Stop Pushing Or The Doctor Is Going To Be Upset…”
“You need to stop pushing or the doctor is going to be upset he wasn’t here to catch it.” – L&D Nurse to mother
not my problem. i’m pushing my BABY out NOW.

This was mine. After the nurse said this it took the doctor another 10mins to show up. Once he did I barely pushed & my little man was out. The doc that showed up wasn’t even my “assigned” OB! This is just one of the many reasons why next time I want a home birth.

As long as everything is proceeding normally, WHAT is so magical about the doctor showing up? If the mom pushes listening to her body, all the doctor has to do is catch. Doesn’t take an MD to do that (as any father who has caught his child in a home birth can attest). This comment works okay on moms who have had epidurals, but those of us who have all our feeling — don’t try to stop us.

Actually, you have a great point here. Isn’t the OB really only there for up until the baby (and placenta) emerges? After that the baby is in the nurses and pediatricians hands, and unless there was an OB there to do an episiotomy mom most likely will have little use for an OB at that point. OB’s are really for c-sections, if you ask me. Nurses can administer pitocen to stop hemorrage, and homorrage is less likely if the OB isn’t there pulling on the cord, and most stitches can wait at least a couple minutes, so why should I care if the doctor makes it? Hell, the OB doesn’t really even need to catch most of the time. S/he may care because they gets paid less, but that is not me or my baby’s problem. Period.

Then he needs to get his @ss in gear.
If he’s busy sleeping or getting coffee or ordering lunch, or ANYTHING other than being here, TOO FREAKING BAD.
Oh, and if he doesn’t get here in time, I will NOT be expecting a bill for the delivery phase. Because he didn’t do any work. NO WORK: NO PAY!

To add to Ann’s comment- Some of us mothers have caught our babies too. And ye, unless something is wrong, it really is not anywhere near a hard thing to do!

Ditto on this one. I really can’t imagine having anyone else catch my baby anymore. It just felt right for me to do it myself. I kind of used the bed I was kneeling on to help me catch and just lifted him up after that. It was absolutely perfect.

Or doulas. I caught two babies in my car, both (oddly) with nuchal hands and wrapped cords. It’s not rocket science.
My sis’s midwife told her that she wouldn’t catch a baby with mom in a squat, so my sis felt forced to lie down. I told her to squat this time, and catch it herself, it’s not that complicated.

Um… great that he wants to be involved in the birth. Maybe if he’ll really be THAT upset, he can be there for the whole laboring thing… like a midwife.

This last birth, I didn’t push, my body pushed. Quite against my will, as it started while I was in the van on the way to the birth center! I only had two pushes (again, I didn’t do it) once in the door and I was looking at my baby under me, setting her shakily down on the chux pad in shock.
“Don’t push,” my ass.
