“You have to induce soon or you’ll kill your baby.” – OB to mother at 36 weeks with a normal pregnancy.

Doctor must have been pretty desperate to induce if s/he’d say a barefaced lie like that!
Note the dead-baby card is played in active voice. Not “Or your baby will die” but it’s “You’ll kill your baby.” So the doctor puts the full burden on the mom: if she doesn’t act, her inaction now has murderous intent. Not nice, Doc. Not nice.

36 weeks? I’m going to assume that this is a healthy pregnancy, since the comment was submitted to this site. And if my assumption is correct, all I have to say is,
RUN, RUN, RUN far away from this doctor! Seriously, let’s see how quickly a 36 week along woman can move! I’ll bet it’s faster than I could and I’m not pregnant!

This makes no sense. She’s 4 weeks away from the due date the doctor gave her. There is no reason to induce unless there is some info we’re missing, but it says normal pregnancy.
I’m just so glad that I didn’t have to deal with doctor’s for my actual birth (switched to a midwife at 30 weeks). I think I would have slapped the doctor for a comment like this.

Surely there’s something more to this, if she was 40 weeks, or even maybe 38 weeks I’d understand this comment, the idea that a woman isn’t capable of going into labour alone. But 36 just dosen’t make sense. If he said that to all his patients he would be out of business, so there has to be something more to this.

Really, you would understand at 40 weeks even though all research suggests 42-43 weeks. I don’t think you meant you would understand. I think you meant that you are used to doctors throwing a fit at 40 weeks at it is nothing new- even though it is still an assinine thing to do- it is the current fashion among the supertitious OB’s. gotta have that lucky rabbit’s foot since we can’t do doulbe blind controlled studies on innocent babies. After all there is no other way to gather evidence. *Stepping down off scientific method soap box now.
