Thoughtful Thursday! “…Breastmilk Is More Easily Digested.”
“Oral rehydration solutions (like Pedialyte) are not usually needed for infants who exclusively breast feed because breastmilk is more easily digested.” - Pediatrician to first-time mom concerned about her newborn’s vomiting.
THANK YOU! YES!
a nurse said something very similar to me! Said there’s really no need to offer any other liquids than breastmilk especially if 3 or under

Love Peds with brains.
My daughter was 8 months when a crazy doc told me she would take much longer to get over the diarrhea she had if I didn’t quit nursing her for two days and just give her flat Sprite.
Uh… yeah… no. First, I don’t believe that. Second, if I did then I would just deal with the diarrhea longer before doing this to my child.

Yeah well… doc *was* about 200 yrs old. It was our (then) regular doc’s day off so we got who we got of his three partners for a sick visit. This guy was my least favorite one to draw and we always seemed to get him. That was the day I finally learned my lesson (after a few other head shaking visits before this): The child is never sick enough to go in on Wednesday… it can wait till Thursday unless it needs an ER visit.

Perhaps his partners would like to hear about him practicing paleolithic medicine. I’m sure they would not like to lose patients due to his refusal to update his education.

This is awesome. When my son was very young, under 18 months, he was vomiting enough that we finally took him to urgent care because he hadn’t peed in 5 hours. The urgent care doctor told us we needed to stop nursing him for 12 hours because dairy is very hard on baby stomachs. I wanted to kick him in the shins.

Yeah, you know that species-specific milk is always SO HARD on newborns. You see it all in the animal kingdom….have to give pedialyte to calves when they get sick, too.

Our baby had what the doctor called “happy GERD” – he vomited copiously (fountains, not just little spit-ups), 2-3 times daily, but he was clearly still thriving and gaining weight. He was definitely breastfeeding enough to make up for all of the liquid he lost! In some cases of GERD (or reflux), the baby’s nutrition or hydration is impacted enough to make reflux medication necessary, but in our case the solution was just to feed him often… and to do lots and lots of laundry. Eesh. We’re past that stage now.

Yeah, my son was like that but he will still spit up if he nurses a lot and then runs around. He’s almost four.
The only thing I would say is if your son is still spitting up A LOT watch out for his teeth, my son’s teeth are ruined from a combination of early teething and constant acid bath.

That’s really nice. I am sure it was just spit up, which a lot of infants get since their stomach isn’t used to certain things as well as they will eat sometimes more than enough. I am glad they didn’t suggest any medicine. Most won’t at all, so they encourage for breast milk to be used. Way to go pediatrician. And first time mom, don’t worry, its common
