“You Should Calm Down, This Will Go On For At Least Another 12 Hours.”
“You should calm down, this will go on for at least another 12 hours.” – OB to mother who was responding to an intense period of labor. The baby was born 45 minutes later.

I think the doctor *did* know she was in transition (because what doctor isn’t constantly sticking his or her fingers up there?) but probably the doctor wanted her to be quiet.
It’s the “you should calm down” part that bugs me rather than the time estimate. The doctor is trying to frighten the mom and tell her to calm down like she’s a little kid. It’s patronizing.

You know what? It doesn’t matter if the baby was born 45 minutes after this comment or twelve hours later. There is NO REASON WHATSOEVER for something like this to be said to a laboring Momma!
And on a separate note, way to go, healthcare provider… you’re obviously really good at listening to the way a mother vocalizes.
