“If You Go Sledding, You’ll Have A Dead Baby…”
“If you go sledding, you’ll have a dead baby. You also can’t jump into a swimming pool, because that will cause your baby to die too.” – OB to mother.
So what can we do, Doctor? Should I just remain in bed the entire 40+ weeks and not so much as go to the mailbox or grocery store, just in case?

He’d probably prefer you stay in a hospital bed, laying on your left side, with an IV.

How about a little common sense with that statement? Perhaps “I wouldn’t recommend you belly flop off the diving board while pregnant.” or “I wouldn’t sled down the local thrill hill while pregnant.”
Doing those things are slightly different than doing things like hopping into the pool or sledding down the gentle slope in your yard with your toddler while pregnant.
A little bit of perspective helps, lol.

Earlier this year, a woman gave birth after running the Chicago Marathon earlier THAT DAY.
On a more personal note… I went down a water slide into a lake ^_^. We’re still a month out from “due” but… Newbie is still well and healthy.

*sigh*. Doctor. I’d like you to see if you can spend 42 weeks as a practicing obstetrician without using the words dead and baby (or any conjugations of those words, or anything that means the same thing as those words, no cheating) in the same sentence. I bet your complication rate would actually go DOWN.

My mother actually jumped off a low stool while pregnant. Freaked those watching her right out, but she figured it was safer than trying to get down one leg at a time, losing her balance, and falling ON her belly.
The baby didn’t die.
I seem to recall her sledding down a big hill on a toboggan while expecting at least one of my younger sisters.
But then, Mom’s always been special. She breastfed all her kids even though that “wasn’t done” at the time, birthed without drugs, and generally taught me to be the pain in the ass strong woman capable of independent thought that I am today.

Did the doctor say what the mechanism was that would kill the baby? Are babies allergic to sleds and swimming pools?
Do they just expire in the presence of water?
I know office visits are only seven minutes long, but you’d think the doctor could at least say, “Activity is generally fine as long as you’re not putting pressure on your belly. Baby will be safer if you don’t dive and if you don’t lie on your stomach on the sled.”

Yeah she said lifting a 10 lb ball over and over was just as bad as lifting something that was 50 lbs. Which seemed funny to me that she was against bowling and sledding cause she went water skiing pregnant several times with most of my siblings. and they all lived…

The NP at the clinic where I had my first pregnancy test told me I couldn’t go ice skating. I told her I’d been skating since I was 5 years old, I know how to NOT fall on my belly! Oh well, I went anyway

This one just made me laugh. You couldn’t possibly take this seriously.
It reminds me of that scene from Parks and Recreation where the guy is talking about all the different things that could land you in jail in Venezuela.
You shout too much? Dead baby.
You steal? Dead baby.
You driving too fast? Dead baby.
Slow? Dead baby.
You undercook fish? Believe it or not: dead baby.
Then again, maybe I have a sick sense of humor…

I wnet snow skiing almost every weekend during the winter while 4-5 months pregnant. Admittedly, I was on the bunny slopes with my older kids, but those are the most dangerous, with the out0of-control 200+ pound beginners out there! No dead baby here!
We had a family friend when I was growing up who went water skiing while 5-6 months pregnant. Miraculously – no dead baby!
One of the moms at my son’s school ran a 5K while 8-9 months pregnant. Birthed a super healthy 11+ pound baby. Pretty sure baby was alive at the time…

Have to say though, thought I was going to be dead momma when I first jumped into the swimming pool’s deep end when 9 months with my 1st. I’ve been a swimmer since I was 4, but I was floundering towards the side trying not to drown. Was *not* expecting the boyancy change that went along with that big belly! But you know what? No dead baby! (And mom was fine after some sputtering)

What a CROCK! I was jumping into my mom’s pool at 18 weeks with my first and he’s fine. I went ice skating FOR THE FIRST TIME(which means I fell on my tush quite a bit) when I was 12 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. We’re pregnant, not made of glass!

For all his faults in the delivery room, my first OB was very rational about what I should and should not do during pregnancy. He said “I don’t recommend you go skydiving or join the roller derby, but otherwise use your judgement and you will be fine.”

OK, if a doctor said this to me, I would have laughed in his face and right out the door. I can see telling someone it’s not advisable, or it’s not safe, but that wording is so unprofessional! Not to mention inaccurate and I’ve got a little boy on the couch next to me to prove it (didn’t go sledding, but did plenty of jumping in the pool!)
