“She Doesn’t Have A Choice. All My Patients Get Pitocin.”
“She doesn’t have a choice. All my patients get Pitocin.” – OB to L&D Nurse.
That’s disgusting on so many levels. Is the doctor so lazy (s)he can’t even bother to write separate orders for each patient? Why do all moms have to have their labors arbitrarily and artificially speeded up? Why why why?

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all profession. Even in other professions, this frame of mind wouldn’t work.
Mechanic: You don’t get a choice; all my customers get an oil change with Pen.zoil.
Chef: You don’t get a choice. All my customers get garlic.
Tailor: You don’t get a choice. All my customers get a size 6 dress.
It doesn’t work in those fields, and it doesn’t work in medicine.

How scary!
I’m so sorry that was said to you. I hope you were able to avoid pit and have the birth you wanted and deserved, OP.

And this wasn’t even said to the mother, but to the nurse! As a two time attempted VBAC I would call a lawyer and/or walk out if some dumbass OB that I clearly didn’t know threatened me with pitocin. That sh!t is freaken dangerous. Never mind that is hurts like hell. It can kill.

What the hell is the point of the FDA if doctors will just ignore the instructions on the package? ALL of his patients get pitocin — including VBAC moms? (Assuming he even “allows” VBACs, which I’m sure he doesn’t because “they always rupture” — well DUH, if you’re pumping all of them full of drugs specifically contraindicated for them!)

More to the point: what the hell is the point of DOCTORS if every one of our bodies needs exactly the same interventions? Why not just order a Birth Package from birth-dot-com and self-administer the life-saving pitocin and follow all the other directions?
Birth via assembly line! And they wonder why women go to midwives.

urg. this so irritates me!! I told the on call dr that I wanted to avoid pitocin (and all meds in general) and he said, ok, we will see how things go, but if there are any issues then you will need to get them anyways. I had no issues at all, until he decided to go and PULL my placenta out, which of course caused me to hemorrhage, which then created the need to give me a shot of something to stop my bleeding. all because of an a-hole doctor that wanted to make me take something I told him I did not want!

Sorry doc, that’s not how it works. You are not having the baby so you don’t get to dictate how she birth’s it. I would definitely request another OB at this point. I really hope this wasn’t your regular OB because that would be really bad.

This is an awful position in which to put this nurse. (S)he has to choose whether to honor the mother’s autonomy or obey doctor’s orders. A simple AMA form should be enough to protect his/her job and allow for patient autonomy, but if they disobey the doctor they’re still going to be in hot water.

Me again! If you didn’t read my previous explainations, my nurse refused to call my wonderful OB (which made him very mad) and I got this gem of an on-call. Well, since he was in such a hurry to get to his scheduled c-section, he had to very painfully scrape my placenta out with his hand, so of course I needed the pit for third stage. My doula didn’t tell me until after that she had heard this, and I looked it up on my bill, because she thought I had been through enough and that after he did that I probably would need it, so it was better not to stress me out more. They are now suing me because I won’t pay some portions of my bill (insurance has already paid 90% of it anyway) I feel like he was also punishing me for being drug free.

There should be offical complaints against both the doctor and the nurse. Considering all the nurses flirting with this monster I would consider counter sueing or going to the news, and of course Angie’s list. Nobody should be scraping out a placenta. I once threatened a professional who had done such a bad job we had to switch providers, anyway the incompetent guy was pestering us in spite of having gotten his 90% from insurance. I told his office manager that if he should consider himself lucky that he got anything for his incompetent service and that if I got one more harrasing call or bill that I would be reporting him to the state. He magically went away! Oh yes, and my office applauded when I hung up the phone. Seems dening you access to your own doctor could cause a really big stink once that was brought to the attention of the hospital administrator.

So far I have not heard back from their attorney after sending my correspondence (sp?). I had planned on sending the hospital my birth story and explaining everything but I wasn’t sure what would happen and I ddn’t know if I could handle it if they were rude to me. I think they would just think I was a hyserical woman. This OB is the head of L&D by the way. They are going to take his word over ours. I am self employed so I only took 2 weeks off PP and have been running non stop ever since, baby in tow, and have just been tired and worn out. I just had to ask myself if I could handle one more thing on my plate and the answer was no. I hate it, but that’s how it’s got to be.

In regards to the suing I think this is one reason why making formal complaints is SOO important. Some Doctors think they can get keep getting away with being a holes bc they don’t get in trouble. Having a formal complaint on record can really help turn these kinds of battles. Now if only the majority of the worlds law enforcers didn’t see docs as gods

This is AWFUL! I actually have a genetic heart condition (Long QT Syndrome) that puts me at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. There are at least 100 medications that are known to aggravate the condition and increase the chances for cardiac arrest…PITOCIN was one of those drugs! When I was pregnant I handed a copy of the “drugs to avoid for cardiac patients” list that I got from my cardiologist to my OB. I told her that they were not to give me ANY drug while i was in the hospital without clearing it first with my cardiologist (he demanded to be paged each time).
I had a scheduled c-section and was put under general anasthesia a month before my due date. This was all done to reduce the chances that I would go into cardiac arrest during actual labor. When I woke up, what did I see but PITOCIN hanging from my IV pole….they started pitocin after delivering my daughter ANYWAY. I was immediately angry, I asked the nurse in the recovery room WHY I WAS GETTING THIS DRUG…and she told me that they did that for everyone “to help the uterus contract back to its normal size.” I replied, “I know what the medicatio does, but is it really worth taking a chance that

I might die.” I demanded that they call my cardiologist. HE flipped out and told them to STOP pitocin immediately. I had to be monitored for 6 hours and I did not get to see my baby at all until she was almost 12 hours old. I developed some arrhythmias as a result, but was lucky enough to come through ok.
I don’t know why the OB that did the procedure had to be on such a power trip, but I’m still angry about the use of pitocin. It was almost a life or death situation.

Well then you just need to go away and send in someone who understands the legalities of informed consent.
