Thoughtful Thursday! “We’ll Make Sure You Get The Birth You Want.”
“I think it’s a great idea. Make a list of what you absolutely want, we’ll all sign off on it, and we’ll make sure you get the birth you want.” – OB to mother when talking about the mother’s birth wishes and a birth plan.
Is it bad that my first thought on this one was about the legal ramifications this OB might face if the mom CAN’T, for safety reasons, get the birth she wants?

This is me!
With the exception of one doctor (who always rushed me.), this whole practice was incredibly supportive. When I expressed my goal to go natural, I was told “Well, that’s always our goal, too”. When I was laboring, they were respectful of mywishes not to be hooked up to the monitor or IV, and to be able to move freely, ect ect ect.
Unfortunately, even the best practices have their limits, and they met theirs when it was discovered (at 5cm, after nine hours of labor) that my girl was frank breech. They wouldn’t hear of allowing me to try to deliver vaginally, so off to the OR we went. I should have insisted, but you all know, I’m sure, that the middle of labor isn’t a time when you want to fight with someone.
So they were wonderful and did try, to a point, to make sure I got the birth I wanted.

What a lovely practice! Glad you had people like that–respectful, supportive. Sorry they weren’t trained in breech birth!
FWIW, I think that, while a good argument can be made for the safety of vaginal breech birth (or at least certain versions) I personally would choose a C/S over vaginal delivery with an unskilled provider…THAT’s when breech gets dangerous! Don’t want a worried doc yanking on baby and setting up a head entrapment that didn’t have to happen! So it’s just possible that you might have done exactly the safest, best thing under the circumstances.
