“Your Pelvis Is Like French Doors…”
“Your pelvis is like french doors. Your baby is the furniture and you won’t be able to push him out if only one door is open.” – OB to mother
What does this even mean? Sure the pelvic girdle is in two (or four, depending on how you count ‘em) parts, but what would it even mean for one of them to be closed? Unless the OB is advocating that mama push while upright, so as to allow the pelvis to expand without pressure on the coccyx, in which case, Bravo, doc!
But really this is just confusing…

I have moved many times. If you’re moving a couch through french doors you pick it up and rotate it.
Same thing with a baby. You move. If you (or the baby) remain in one position it doesn’t fit. The baby has to rotate to get through the french doors…er pelvis.

The analogy is way off, but I do understand it. I happen to be one of the people with “french door syndrome” where half of my pelvis never moved and it made birthing VERY difficult. My doctor actually recommended walking backwards to help readjust my hips, and it helped but didn’t solve the problem and I did eventually “need” an episitomy to help facilitate the pelvic bone placement. If this was said prenatally, things such as chiropractic adjustments and massage can help, as can position changes in labor. But if this was an excuse for a c-section or episiotomy, that just sucks.

Interesting. Now how exactly does cutting the flesh at the exit of the vaginal canal affect the bone placement at the top of the vaginal canal? Did someone have to reach up there and push something around and needed the room? I supposed I should go google “french door syndrome” but I would rather hear it from the expert. Does this have anything to do with what I read on spinning babies about pelvic release? I was very impressed with that manuver. Wish I had gotten a chance to try that.

I used the term “french door syndrome” because I can’t remember the name of the actual condition. I’m sorry that it seemed to offend you, and was in no way mean to be a diagnosis by an “expert”. By cutting an episitomy, they were able to facilitate his head because he was having difficulty moving through the birth canal (because my pelvic bones were actually NOT only in the top of the canal) and started going into distress. I have no idea about spinning babies, nor do I know much about pelvic release. I was simply explaining one example in which the doctor’s analogy might have been applicable. In fact, when I read this to my husband, he said it actually made sense to him, based on what had happened with me.

Okay Lindsey this isn’t the first post where I have been amazed that part of a woman’s pelvis is between her legs rather than over and behind them. I guess there are a few women out there who are even more funnel shaped than men are. I’m going with you have a rare thing going on that even you don’t know the name of, but you and your husband lived it and know what you are talking about. That makes you the expert – the one who knows the most out of any given group.
I learn things on here all the time. Like what a BPP is and how it is scored. I did try googling French door syndrome and got ads from window companies and a list of other birth syndromes! French doors not listed. I wasn’t offended, but I’m still not sure what you are talking about. Before your next baby you should go to spinningbabies.com and look for the manuver to get the hips to open. I remember it had the women laying on the edge of the couch or bed and someone making sure she didn’t fall off the edge. It might just work to open your stiff or locked side and it is worth a try. That combined with a squatting delivery has to help.
Either that or you aren’t broken at all, your doctor just lied to you and you believed him.

I apologize for getting snippy. I didn’t understand where you were coming from, and I get kind of defensive about it. I will definitely check out that website, it is something I haven’t learned much about. Right now I’m undergoing physical therapy and chiropractic care to help realign my hips. Hopefully, this won’t happen next time around!
