“I will give you one more hour. You’ve been in labor for six hours, it’s time we talk about a cesarean section.” – OB
I have a name for OBs like this. Scalpel Happy Freaks.

Oh boy cut happy, aren’t we??? From start to finish I was in labor for 25 hours overall with my first (water broke -> nothing happened -> hours later labor started on its own -> 14 hours of unaugmented labor -> 2.5h pushing -> BABY THERE) – with the OP’s obgyn I would have been cut open in no time!

I wonder what his/her C-section rate is if all women who labour longer than 7 hours get sectioned?
[Reply]
That’s why they call them surgeons
[Reply]
Sounds like my L&D nurse. She wasn’t threatening to cut me open, but after 17 hours of labor she said it was taking too long and had no choice but to have the pit. I could handle the contractions until they forced the pit on me, and I say forced because they put it on me without my consent and refused to take it off of me when I found out it was on.

It is stories like yours that make me so angry. To be given meds without consent… I would have ripped my IV out. I have done that, actually, but it wasn’t a situation involving childbirth.

What the hell kind of time is 7 hours for labor? That’s how long I was in labor with my daughter and that was because they put me on pitocin drip!

Yeah, I’m just getting started at 7 hours.
The only suggestion I can think of is that when you get to the hospital, either be ready to push, or tell them you think you had maybe one or two contractions, so far, and that you still have hours ahead of you. And refuse VEs.

My labor with my daughter was 7 hours, but I *knew* that was fast. My nurse commented about how fast things went. She was wonderful.
I was expecting a 24 hour labor, so I hit a point of “I have only been doing this for a few hours, I can’t keep it up”. It turned out I was in transition, which was enough to keep me motivated.
But as I said… I know this was *NOT* the norm. the OB in the post is just…. insane.
[Reply]
Oh no, 6 whole hours! Maybe after 24 hours and the water being broken, then we can discuss that. Of course, I was in labor for 25 hours (not counting the pre-dromal labor I was in the 3 days prior) and still managed to have a natural, vaginal birth. 6 hours doesn’t seem like that long of a time to consider going to drastic measures like a c-section.

When the pink link comes, I hope the poster will tell us what time of day this was said. Something tells me the doctor doesn’t roll out of bed at two o’clock in the morning to stagger to the hospital and talk to the moms who have been in labor for six entire hours.
[Reply]
None of my clients have gone under 6 hours; in fact, one went 60 and one PUSHED for just over six! Both felt really lucky they were birthing at home, because they knew they would have been sectioned in a hospital.
Becky J – primip just means first time in labor, and they usually take longer than mamas who have had a baby before.

I’m really hoping the doc meant that she was in the hospital for 6 hours after laboring at home for X hours on her own. Unrealistically optimistic, but I can dream, right?

wow. every day i come on here i thank goodness for my fantastic ob. My first labor was 18 hrs. from first real contractions to baby. My second (induced) was 9. And my third was 14 (though i firmly believe if i had stayed home and labored not in a hospital bed it would have been shorter but I wasn’t confident in my abilities to handle the pain so i went with an epidural. next time we’re staying home). My shortest labor would have been too long for this dr. Ugh.

This is the story behind my post:
First time mom initially wants to birth naturally at a birth center and starts laboring there. She then decides that she wants an epidural, and goes to the hospital to have it. At this point, her baby is not in distress, baby is in a favorable position, she has good, strong contractions, and is dilated four cm’s (according to fabulous midwife who is attending the birth). The OB tells the mom that the now six hours (from when she started feeling contractions) she has been laboring is a long time, and that this itself is a risk for her and the baby. An hour and a half after the mom has had the epidural, she is sectioned!!! For NO other reason than the fact that it has been over six hours, and that she is ‘only’ four centimeters. It was (obviously) a shocking experience.

How sad that she was sectioned.
I feel so terrible for all the mothers at the mercy of this horrible, impatient OB.

Is this OB’s c-section rate around 90%? Because most moms have longer than a 6 hour labor.
So sad for this poor mom!

Do you think this OB was being a jerk because she had the nerve to try and deliver at a birth center and then transfer to the hospital?

The asshat doctor should have gone home and come back at 9 am. There was no reason for this whatsoever. The hospital should be questioned about their coverage. if they are backing up a birth center they should have someone in the building 24 hours. This couldn’t have been “her” doctor since she was working with the birthcenter midwives. This must have been whoever was on call. So clearly he could have gone home when his shift changed/ I’m pretty convinced that he did this because he didn’t approve of the birth center model.

OMFG!!!!!!!!
Really, how does the mum feel about that now? Is she alright emotionally?
2 unnecessary sections for me (one a HBAC trf due to incompetent midwives into the arms of an equally incompetent cut happy doctor) and I am going unassisted next time.

Got a golf game you need to get to, doc?
Ridiculosity.
I’ve had a 6 hr and two 4 hour labors. That’s called *fast*. That kind of history usually brings with it the suggestion to induce “so you don’t end up delivering in the car or something”.
So clearly, women can’t win. Whatever the magical acceptable number of hours is for labor, none of us can find out, let alone meet it. grrr.

Funny how one doctor would call a 4 hour labor precipitous and another might say “Well, let’s section you, you’ve been in labor too long.”
Sheesh, there needs to be a world wide standard. Something like, I dunno, let the mother labor as long as she wants provided there is no medical reason to section her.
[Reply]
WTF!?! Seriously Dr, just go play your golf and come back when you’re done.
I’m sooo glad this wasn’t my Dr. I was in labor for 12 hours before I even went to the hospital! It took 30 hours total! This Dr must have NO vaginal births on his record.

What happened to 1cm/hour?!?
I mean, even that’s unreasonable, but does this doctor really expect moms to dilate 2cm/hour?

Actually, when I asked a nurse this once, she said that the average was 2cm an hour. I reminded her that we were talking about a primip, but she wasn’t impressed.
I beg my clients not to tell the doc real numbers so they won’t get pressured.

I’m a first time mom. I didn’t even dilate until after the 24 hour mark. My water was broken, I was contracting fine, he just didn’t drop down, engage, or anything, and I was content to let him come when he wanted to; at the 36 hour mark.
