“…Crack Whores Are On Their Backs All The Time & Their Babies Are Usually Fine.”
“Honey, crack whores are on their backs all the time and their babies are usually fine.” – OB to mother who asked if it was okay to sleep on her back while pregnant.
In what universe is being born premature and spending the first few months of your life in the NICU on step down and then living in the foster care system considered “fine”??

A simple, “Yes, it’s fine as long as you’re comfortable” would have sufficed, doc.

Speaking from experience there, ob?
and like Palila said, I thought they were usually always on their knees too….you know something I don’t, ob?

In what universe are the babies born to mothers using crack during the pregnancy “usually fine”. Crack babies are heart breaking. They are born fighting an addiction that they are in no way responsible for and their cries alone are enough to bring me to my knees.

OK, am I the only one who saw the title and thought this had to do with pushing?
… not that that mitigates anything. But what is it with OBs making comparisons to women who use crack? I heard of one fond of “counseling” women who were concerned about nutrition that he’s seen plenty of babies made of “slim jims and crack cocaine” (who were FINE, of course!). I think OBs and peds should talk more…

That’s just the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. (Thinking that one over… yeah, the stupidest.)
This is a legitimate question that has legitimate answers and biology behind it. Do your job, Doc. When a mother asks a question, give her good information, not just a flippant pseudo-joke.
