“See! I Told You Not To Write Up A Birth Plan.”
“See! I told you not to write up a birth plan.” – OB to mother after unplanned cesarean.
I rant about this exact problem (“Don’t write a birth plan because you might get too attached to it. You should remain flexible,” they say) in my book in the chapter on birth plans. Please! If we followed this logic, none of us should ever try to write down a family budget. Because, you know, you can’t predict everything.

And forget travel plans, vacation plans or career plans.

Or you know, balance the federal budget.

arrggh. I’m hitting submit too soon all the time now.
My point was, that is exactly what’s happening in our society. We don’t plan for anything because we can’t plan for everything, so we end up both personally and nationally in enough debt that we may not see the end of it in our lifetimes.

In this case the doctor is implying that the mother “needed” a section BECAUSE she wrote a birth plan, aka it’s all mom’s fault.
Instead of blaming the mother for the c-section, the doctor could have said, “I’m sorry things didn’t go as you would have liked, but there’s always next time.”

i wrote a birth plan…. and the Dr and nurse respected it rather well… i didnt even get an IV! But as a FTM its hard to understand what is really needed and what is just easier for the Dr, so when i wrote the birthplan with #2 it was pretty much set in stone except for emergencies. Its harder without a history of how your body will react and function.
but that is no reason not to give a rough outline of ideal conditions.

Because, y’know, doctors never have written plans for what they do either. It’s true! When it’s c-section time they just blindfold the doctor, spin him around a few times, put a scalpel in his hand and hope for the best. You can’t account for every variable, so why bother trying? Besides this way makes it so much more exciting! It’s great for parties too, especially at Halloween…

I’ve decided I’m going to type up a “Birth Plan” and all it’s going to say is “Leave me the hell alone and get out of my room!”

Or you could say “If you respect me, then I will respect you. Respect my choices when it is not an emergency situation, and I will respect your choices if an emergency crops up.”

Or how about “If you want to be present, you’re only catching. My body knows what to do better than you do.”

I will really probably tell them to leave me alone. I was scheduling a HB but had to be put on blood pressure medication, HB midwife had to drop me from care, so I have to deliver unassisted, or in the hospital… so I’m choosing in the hospital, mostly unassisted. I’m also VBACing in a reallllly VBAC hostile area, so I don’t want them even looking at me and coming up with a reason I need another section.

I will give the hospital we’ve used credit: the nurse with my fourth asked if we had a birth plan and read it, after she had helped me into the bath.
When I had my third, I arrived 20 minutes before she was born. The nurses said, “There isn’t a lot of time to read this–can you give us the highlights?” My husband said, “As few interventions as possible!” Even in my altered state of mind, I thought that was funny–there was no time for interventions!

No, this is why you write two birth plans!
I had two, one for a birth which was a single side and when I showed it to my own consultant she was already saying the same things because of my scar type she needed me to keep moving and not to be medicated. My second one was what would happen in an emergency.
Both were brief and bullet pointed.
Despite my Doula making a show of putting it on my notes (so it would have to be moved) and telling everyone it was there and stating what was in it regularly, they still managed to mostly ignore it! Apart from not giving me pain relief (I couldn’t even get my prescribed codydramol to ease the PGP)
