“Why Don’t You Go Home And Do Your Research.”
“Why don’t you go home and do your research.” – Certified Nurse Midwife to woman who asked for a diaphragm as her preferred method of birth control
“Do you research” is just a condescending code phrase for, “You just made a choice that I don’t approve of.” It’s one of the most common slams on parents for a variety of choices that they make.
By the way, as a diaphragm user myself, I *did* do my research. We all have to weigh risks and benefits and choose accordingly. But for my *personal tastes,* the hormonal methods have too many unknowns: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/oral-contraceptives
Sarah, the cynic in me believes that docs like these not just because many of them are in bed with their manufacturers, but they also require frequent office vi$it$ and, in a way, justify a doctor’s professional sense of importance and being needed. Medically regulating a woman’s sex life can be, for *some* doctors and on *some* level, a means of power consolidation.

Newsflash! YOUR preferred method of birth control and MINE may differ. If they do, YOU have to deal with it and give me my preferred method (as long as it’s not over the counter). Don’t like a diaphragm? Then YOU don’t have to use it!!!

Um, I did. Now be a good CNM and get me one please.

I’ve done my research, tyvm. I read the pink link on the previous post and it boggles my mind how so many docs seem to think the only decent forms of contraception require hormones or invasive procedures.
