“I Am Going To *KILL* Your Doctor.”
“I am going to *KILL* your doctor!” – On call OB to mother during repairs after a precipitous birth where the regular OB did not make it to the birth.
What was the OB supposed to do to make sure that he/ she was there? ! I know that at my daughters birth, the only one who was going to make it was the on-call OB. Sometimes unexpected things happen. Isn’t that the whole point of having an OB at the hospital?

Maybe this was the end of a long shift or something…but what was the OB supposed to do to make sure that he/ she was there? ! I’m noticing precipitous and repair. I’m thinking there is no way in heck that the regular OB was going to make it in time, and I guess the mother is lucky she didn’t have the baby in the car (although I would have gladly had a baby in the car and turned right around and gone back home, but that is me) So I’m thinking the on call could have just as easily been chastizing the woman for not coming in earlier. But the repair part is really bothering me. Was the regualr OB supposed to cut an episiotomy at the most recent office visit just in case. Maybe I am imagining a bigger and messier repair than what actually happened, but it seems this doctor is trying to blame the other doctor for the extent of the damage. I hope the OP is okay now.

I think it’s more like “Oh, man, this is so much work to do this complicated repair, I could kill your doctor for leaving this to me instead of coming in himself!” He seems to be specifically complaining that he is doing an unusually complicated repair.

I still don’t get how it is the OB’s fault that the damage was so extensive. He wasn’t even there. He didn’t give her a drug that resulted in a precipitous birth. It just happened that way. It isn’t like he was there and was screaming at her to push purple and caused her to explode and then just walked off and left it to a resident to repair. The OB didn’t make it in time because the birth went very fast. I didn’t even get the impression that the regular OB had the night off. Maybe the pink link will say different. If the regular OB was on his way maybe the on call should just wait and let him do the repairs. I mean really what does he want from the guy/gal? Crystal ball to know which patients are going to be easy and make sure he hauls his butt in for the ones that are going to be hard. Is that reasonable? The regular OB didn’t do anything wrong! He didn’t leave it to anyone. It hadn’t happend yet. As I said was he supposed to cut and episiotomy at the previous office visit and let her walk around like that “just in case?” Whoever said this needs to be reported to someone.

Because I had to show up for the birth and because he/she didn’t induce or section you sooner, you major inconvenience. How nice.

Oh good… let’s just sit back and watch the doctor’s turn on each other. That should be fun!

Especially if they use the c-section tools on each other as weapons! My favorite would be the cautorizing tool. *evil grin*

Ooh, and make them have to do the match while they have an epidural! You know, since it’s so great. :-p

Should they also have an IV in one arm that they have to drag about by themselves?

Not the epidural, the intrathecal, so they can still move around, but not feel. And YES, they need to drag around an IV tower AND wear gowns where their butts hang out!

I think you forgot the catheter. you can’t have an epidural without a catheter!

And the BP cuff on the other arm! Or maybe like they did to a friend of mine and put the BP cuff on the SAME arm the IV is in….

Wow, on the SAME arm? Idiots! That seems counterproductive of what the IV is supposed to do. Especially if the machine breaks and it stays inflated for a while.

Yep. They had like 3 or 4 nurses trying to get her all set up when she first got there and I guess they just weren’t paying attention. She eventually made them mad when she pulled it off (after repeatedly calling the nurses station to tell them what was going on) and threw it across the room. That got them rushing in to see why they suddenly couldn’t get a BP reading on her…

Wow that’s a new one! Run out of threats for mom so turning on the staff?!

Although he didn’t use these particular words, I got a very similar attitude from the on-call OB who attended the birth of my first child. In fact, I don’t think I can even remember him saying more than about 10 sentences directly to me the entire 9 hours he was involved with my labor and delivery. DS was born at 2:13 AM, and this doctor made it VERY clear that he was not thrilled to be there at that hour.
The next morning, my own OB came in and said that she was truly sorry she hadn’t been the one delivering me, and that she was sure Dr. X would “have her return the favor” soon enough.
Sadly, I can remember a time that Dr. X was considered to be an excellent OB, so I’m guessing his was a case of burnout.

What a terrible world, where obstetricians are expected to deliver babies.
And where the on-call doctor has to do something. I weep for the death of the spirit and the soul.
