“…Get The Epidural Right Away, Because You Won’t Last Long Without It.”
“You might be lucky and your labor will only be a couple of hours…but if it’s any longer than that, just get the epidural right away, because you won’t last long without it.” – Childbirth Educator to a class of expectant families.
Thanks for the vote of confidence! Meanwhile, think you can focus on educating instead of pushing your epidural agenda on the class?

I don’t know. Every childbirth class I’ve taken (2) has pushed the “if you get an epidural you’re a failure” agenda, so I don’t know why a class from the opposite view point is such a horrible thing.
And these were both hospital based classes.

That’s a problem, too. Any class that’s skewed in one direction or another isn’t providing education, it’s providing an opinion. The classes are supposed to let the students form opinions of their own and use them to decide what they want to do.

Remind me why I’m paying to take this class again.
I’m so glad we took Bradley classes.

I wouldn’t ever pay to take a class that is recommended by a hospital. The don’t educate on how to birth your baby but how the hospital wants to birth your baby.

We opted to do a Birthing from Within class instead of hospital classes. In retrospect, it probably would’ve been better (especially for our budget) for us to go to the hospital classes; I think it would’ve alleviated some of my concerns, especially about hospital policies.

I’m paying you to teach me other pain management techniques than to just get an epidural, you jerk! I took lamaze with my first and since I was in school and my boyfriend, (now husband)worked full time, we didn’t see much of each other. He saw me filling out a paper at the class and said “oh, you’re left handed?” And the instructor looked at me smugly and said “Well, I guess you two have alot to learn about each other, don’t you?” Then, later in the class, she has everyone line up on each side of the room. One side for wanting an epidural or pain meds and the other side for wanting other pain management. I was on the non-epidural side and she looks at me and said “wow, I thought you’d want the epidural!”

OK, that is just messed up! Can we say, “Old wives’ tales, anyone?” as if because you’re left-handed that’s going to make you want the epi! LMAO

Hmmm, with baby 1 I had an epidural after 25 hours (during a 31 hour labour).
Baby 2 was a 19 hour unassisted home birth and I’m pretty sure I dont remember my mum giving me an epidural at any point.
I walked out half way through the hospital birth class because it was pretty bad but it wasn’t as bad as this one! I went to hypnobirthing classes and REALLLLLY recommend them!

Yeah, I had an epidural 24 hours into a 36 hour labor. I didn’t dilate UNTIL I got the epidural, but I “lasted” pretty well up until roughly an hour before I got it. That hour was spent trying to make an informed decision between agonizing contractions. But I feel I made the right choice.

I’d definitely call that a legitimate reason to get one. I almost caved with #1 after 16 hours of labor just because I hadn’t slept the night before and felt like I really needed just a few hours of rest. Luckily right about when I felt like I couldn’t keep going I felt him plop right down and got a huge adrenaline rush!

I lasted well until an hour before mine too. I was only at 4cm, I had been 7cm the check before that one but the jerk midwife used latex gloves, latex makes me swell up. So from going from 7cm to 4, being yelled at by the OB for doing hypnobirthing (he screamed in my face that there’s no such thing as a pain free labour so clearly I wasnt in real labour as I was only 4cm)and just being generally bullied by other staff for wanting a natural birth, basically the hypnobirthing stopped working. I went from being a calm, peaceful labouring woman feeling pretty powerful to being a screaming mess begging for an epidural in the space of about 5 mins. It took them an hour to come and give me the epidural, by the time it came even my baby’s dad was crying because I was in such a state.
Thats partly why DS2 was an unassisted homebirth. And guess what? I got my pain free labour.
Guess that nasty OB didn’t know what he was talking about. I should write to him to let him know

yah, and they neglect to tell you that sometimes epidural make you SICK!! I lasted 25 hours without one with my first but finally decided to take it as I was not progressing and was exhausted. I then proceeded to throw up every fifteen minutes for the next 30 hours!!! My daughter was finally born after 36 hours of labor & an emergency c-section, but her first day of life was me breastfeeding and throwing up simultaneously. It was nothing but poison for my body & the worst part of the whole experience. I’d take the natural pain of childbirth any day of the week.

Mine!
Our classes were done by three different ladies, rotating. The other two were great, but this one was just too full of opinions and assumptions. After this comment she went on for about twenty minutes about how great epidurals are.
For the record, I had a 32 1/2 hour labor and went 13 or so hours before getting an epidural. I probably would have lasted longer than that, but I’d gotten zero sleep the night before, so by that point I was on about 30 hours without sleep and still only 3 cm dilated with absolutely HORRID contractions every two minutes. So…yeah. lol

Funny, I lasted 22 1/2 hours my first labor without one. Never felt the need…
