“I’m Dying To Get My Fingers In There…”
“I’m dying to get my fingers in there and see how you’re progressing!” – OB to mother who declined a cervical exam.
Because most OBs can only tell progress by the almighty vaginal exam! ::bangs head on desk:: *If* you had been with the mother for more that 45 seconds of her labor, you could tell she is progressing through all kinds of other signs such as (but not limited to):
-Mother becomes more focused and quiet
-Mother’s belly changes shape as baby moves down
-Mother has nausea, burping, hiccups, and/or vomiting, all fabulous signs of baby moving
-the line between the mother’s buttocks becomes longer and redder (see Elizabeth Davis’ Heart and Hands for a description of this)
-Mother expresses sensations of fullness or pressure in her pelvic floor
And so on and so forth…
::sigh::

Exactly this!
When I told a doctor that I’d let her know when my client was ready to push, she was skeptical, but she respected it. When I told her, and I was right, she was impressed. ![]()
When you sit straight through a full labor a few times (which most doctors don’t do, granted, most don’t have the luxury), you can usually tell.

Thanks for the enthusiasm for your job, but “no cervical exams” actually does mean “no cervical exams.” Now, take the time you WOULD have spent digging around in my vagina and look up “ejection reflex” instead, I’m just gonna go ahead and do my thang.

OMG i seriously got chills and a little nauseous reading this. that is sick and wrong. ew!! I firmly believe my last birth would have been a LOT better if I had just kept the nurses out of my body and went off instinct. Even with a epidural (albeit a failed one) I still knew when it was time to push but couldn’t seem to convince the freaking nurse. Til I begged her to check again and what do you know i had gone from a 5 to 10 in 20 minutes. Same with my sister in law. cervical exams are flawed and mothers bodies know what they are doing better than the dr so just let us do our thing. I’m planning a home birth next time with a midwife once i convince hubby lol

This freaks me out. There are bad men in this business who are in it for really bad reasons…sounds like this is one of them. I heard a great quote once “There are two kinds of men who become gynecologists, those who hate women and those who love women” You have to be careful out there ladies!

Eww is right. We did not have a great relationship, but I was in shock when I heard that. Just disgusting. Needless to say, I won’t be using him again if/when we decide to have another baby.
The comment that it sounds like a line from a bad patient/OB porno… that is exactly how it made me feel. Gross. Over the line. Freakin’ watch what you say, Doc.

Fingers…see…no, fingers don’t see. Keep your fingers to yourself.

Haha, yes! When the fingers grow eyes MAYBE they can see how I’m progressing.
