“Don’t worry, this won’t hurt me or Dr. Jones a bit.” -Anesthesiologist administering spinal for cesarean.
Hardy har har! ::sarcasm::
I’d have to say that this one is more “in poor taste” than plain ole’ “cruel” like some of the things I read on here. Nevertheless, things like this just don’t need to be said! OP, I’m sorry that you had to deal with such a stupid statement.

Yes, I have to agree with you. I think it was a clueless doctor trying to lighten the mood. Reminds me of a client of mine whose midwife said while she was getting ready for her unplanned c-section, “I always tell my patients that the only way the birth is not natural is if the baby comes out your nose!” Idiotic.

Agreed. A friend of mine was getting a needle in her spine (not sure if it was a spinal or an epidural, or even if there’s a diffrence, but it was a needle. In her spine. Needless to say i was less than useful as a friend right then.) for a very necisary c-section and the doctor was holding her in a curl, and had her hair in his fist. (It sounds awkward, and it looked awkward, but her hair is VERY long and she had complained that her ponytail was giving her a headache, so the doctor told her that he’d just hold it out of the way for her, no need to get a headache.) The positioning of the doctor and the anethesiologist looked really weird from the door, and a nurse walked in, laughed and said “Ooo… Maybe i should leave you and Doctor alone!” In a really skeevy tone.
The doctor gave her the nastiest look and told her to wait in the hall, he needed to talk to her, and when the door shut he looked down at my friend and appologized for the “unproffesional and unfunny” behavior of the nurse.
We could hear him reaming the nurse out from the hall after the needle was in. We didn’t see the nurse again, even in the halls that day, so I think she was avoiding this doctor’s paitents. He actually sppologized a second time for the comment when my friend was comfortable on the bed and waiting for the OR to clear up.

So sorry op. When I had my c-section the anesthesiologist and his assistant were so caring and respectful. My epidural didn’t take well and they we’re really worried that I might need a general. Fortunately mg OB was great too and since M wasn’t stressed they could place the spinal.

This is my submission. I was a surrogate carrying twins. Twin A went non vertex in the 38th week and I had to schedule a cesarean. We went in at 39w6d and I was so, so terrified. I got a ton of great advice from some knowledgable ladies about cesarean prep and asked the anesthesiologist for some anti anxiety medication and he refused. He told me not to worry- everyone gets nervous. My anxiety overcame me while I was on the table getting the spinal, and that was his response to my hyperventilation. Thankfully, I had the most amazing, sweet OB who stood in front of me and held my shoulders, looking me in the eye the whole time. He coached me through it and calmed me down a lot. The spinal never did kick in. As I laid on the table waiting, I kept telling the anesthesiologist that my blood pressur was dropping and he wouldn’t listen, saying it was normal to feel funny. Well, my BP was dropping, and he had to give other medication when I all but passed out. At that point, I told him I wanted general, and he was more than happy to put me under. I slept through the surgery quite happily.

Oh, no! What a horrible anesthesiologist! Why do people go into pain management if they don’t want to deal with people who are frightened or in pain?
And why on earth would he refuse you anti-anxiety meds? Power trip much? I wish your OB had insisted on it instead of just looking you in the eyes and coaching you through.
