Thoughtful Thursday! “If You Feel Like Pushing, Push…”
“If you feel like pushing, push. Rest when you need to rest. You know what you’re doing and you are doing amazing!” – L&D Nurse to mother birthing twins unmedicated.
I love this!!
I just attended a birth where the mother asked for this, and the doc said, “Yes, but…” and proceeded to tell her that the only way to get a baby out is push to the count of ten, 3x per contraction, flat on her back, blah blah blah… We bargained him down to not changing the “1!! 2!! 3!!” and I amended his words to the mom, out loud in front of the doc, that if she felt like pushing more, or less, to go ahead with what felt right.
Three contractions later she had her 9lb 8oz baby, so she knew her body…

I have a question about pushing…it’s been 10 years, and I still remember it, lol. We had a lovely, supportive nurse who encouraged position changes and did everything right (except she did have to obey the doc who insisted on an IV, blech). I labored on hands and knees because it felt best. I got to 9 cm and wanted so badly to push, but there was a small cervical lip. The nurse told me I couldn’t push yet…not until I reached 10 and the lip was gone, and believed me, it was h*** to not push when my body wanted to so badly. Finally, she herself pushed the lip away (with my permission), I suddenly was at 10 cm, and got to push. Could I have pushed at 9 cm with the lip anyway? Or would it have been a problem? Thanks–just curious.

That’s exactly the link I was going to post! : ) There’s another that I’ve read in the past that I’ll look for later, too… if I find it I’ll post it as well.

Wow, that’s really interesting. During my second baby’s birth I did NOT want to be on my back, yet at the last second, it was what felt right and the baby was born within minutes. I was laboring in the water and just floated to my back while crowning. Maybe I had a cervical lip I didn’t know about.
Natural Instincts are so amazing!

Oh, yay! This was mine! Back in 2009 I submitted a nasty comment made the L&D nurse at my first son’s birth to this site (http://myobsaidwhat.com/2009/09/23/are-you-a-smoker/). Almost a year ago now my fraternal twins were born at the same hospital. The OBs began to suspect inter-uterine growth restriction toward the end of the pregnancy, and I eventually ended up with an induction at 39 weeks, 4 days. The OB on call was an amazing woman with twins of her own. She and the nurses were all incredibly warm and supportive. I had a slow pitocin drip, but refused an epidural. When labor kicked in, it kicked in FAST (4 to 10 cms in under an hour)! I pushed on my side this time instead of my back. The OB offered to let me put my leg on her shoulder (so I did!). It was so different than my first, coached labor and being yelled at!

Yeah! So many things right with this statement.
