“Your cervix will melt open like butter this time!” – Midwife to a mother after the mother expressed fear that her second labor would be like her first 38 hour labor.

I love this visualization!! And usually second labors are faster. And there’s nothing like positive reinforcement and imagery!!

Agreed thats it’s a wonderful visualisation tool, but even more amazing is that some cervices can actually feel all ‘buttery’ and like they may melt….you *know* they are going to labour quickly….

When my mw checked my cervix in labor, she said something similar, like “you have the meltiest, cervix i’ve ever felt, its melting like butter” it occurred to me, MUCH later (after the birth) that it was probably a very normal feeling cervix Normal in a good, steadily progressing kind of way (I was 7cm and at least 80% effaced) and the slight exaggeration was said simply to be a positive labor affirmation! Not that thats bad. Because its definitely filed under “correct thing to say after a cervical check”

Does anyone else find this patronising? If it’s just a visualization that’s fine, but saying this to a mum who has valid fears really isn’t addressing them, it’s just deflecting the mother.

No I felt the same. How would she know before labor that everything will go smoothly. I would have wanted a bit more empathy.

Am impatiently waiting for my HBAC any day now and after reading my notes my birth workers said to me “you will go really quickly to 6 (where they sectioned me last time) and then you will fluff around from 6-10 but we won’t worry about that since we won’t be doing any VE’s you won’t know if you have “stalled” or not. When you want to push you will let us know”.

I love the term “birth workers”!! I’ve never heard that one before.
And their idea of not doing VEs is brilliant! It’s always a good idea to minimize or even dispense with them all together, but when someone is worried about stalling it’s even more so!
Wishing you the best of luck with your HBAC and sending happy, healthy birth-y vibes your way.
(Maybe you can ask them about using evening primrose oil to help soften the cervix and maybe make the cervix open more easily.)
