“We’ve Decided All Babies Need To Be Born At Or Before 39 Weeks…”
“We’ve decided all babies need to be born at or before 39 weeks…I was actually just listening to a lecture about it on my drive in this morning.” – OB at a 41 week non stress test.
After reading the OP’s whole story of this horrible day, I see several more post coming. It’s just disgusting how a doctor will change everything they do after listening to one other (unproven) person speak, but never change after being presented with loads of evidence-based care plans.

Where is the rest of her story? I’d like to read it. Seeing OBs treat women like that just reaffirms my belief that midwives are the way to go. I can’t believe the brass balls some of these Obs have to tell their patients the things they do =[ Women deserve so much better.

So… all of a sudden you get to decide that the way babies have been being born for thousands of years (at a minimum) is ALL WRONG, and instead they should be forcibly evicted with extreme prejudice and maximum medical interference?
Nope, sorry, not my baby, not my birth.

Who is this “we,” kemosabe?

Well, too bad that your practice is then in violation of ACOG guidelines and I will be reporting you. BTW, you’re a freaking asshole for saying this so late in the pregnancy. Go shit in a hat and wear it. (reading the rest of this story made me SO angry, I can’t think straight)

So if you have letters after your name then listening to something on the radio is evidence enough, but if you don’t have letters after your name then no amount of through research is good enough.
NAK with my 43-weeker zombie.

Yeah, that tape I fished out from my junk drawer that’s about 15 years old. Bet he forgot to mention that part. And the part that he’s completely full of crap and lying through his teeth.

Really? Can you write down the name of the lecture and the lecturing obstetrician? You can put it on the same paper as your referral for another OB to attend my birth.

I actually just spent 20 minutes trying to find a single study — anything — that ALL babies should be born at 39 weeks. All I could find were dozens of articles regarding how just one week of prematurity can have negative effects on the child’s overall development.
Seriously, do these people EVER question their ASSumptions?

Who says this stuff? Who just assumes that a person is something that can be chopped up and changed around like a car?

So why does the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists NOT recommend any interventions in a normal pregnancy before 42 weeks have been completed since a woman’s LMP? Maybe more OBs should listen to their own advising board.

I guess you haven’t been paying attention, doc, to the ban on inductions before 39 weeks! Maybe you need to listen to some other tapes in your car.

Well, if it was a tape that would explain everything.
Maybe if she got some CD’s or podcasts they’d be more up to date.
