“Oh, He’s Not Engaged…But We Are Going To Lie And Say He Is!”
“Oh, he’s not engaged…but we are going to lie and say he is!” – OB to mother who was getting ready to be induced.
Oh, goody! Because I was so tired of being pregnant that I wanted to take on a ridiculous set of risks for no reason!

Sadly, the OB probably does hear this often enough (women wanting OBs to make up a reason for them to be induced) BUT these women generally do NOT know the risks involved– and whose fault is that? Yes, of course women should take responsibility for their own decisions/education, but it’s the doc’s job to inform people of the risks and benefits of every procedure and to, you know– first, do no harm.
This is my big sticking point when people (especially doctors) claim the increase in inductions and scheduled C/S is patient-led. First, bullsh!t, and second, to the extent that is surely occasionally true, it seems to VERY often be the case that the doc is so thrilled to have a woman ask for something that is easier for the doc (or MW) that he or she is happy to gloss over any risks. That’s not responsible, evidence-based care.

I don’t understand. Who is being lied to? What difference does it make? If your being induced, labor is being forced prematurely anyway.

What? Huh? Why?
Reminds me of the 80s phrase, “Let’s not and say we did.”
