Thoughtful Thursday! “You Should Push In Any Position You’re Comfortable…”
“You should push in any position you’re comfortable, but I would recommend you not lay on your back” – Neurosurgeon to patient with a back problem.
I think it’s sad that this information is only being given to a woman with back problems that are bad enough to require a specialist. What about the rest of us?

I was just thinking that it’s especially sad that it takes someone as specialized and qualified as a neurosurgeon to point out something as simple as “it’s not wise to push while flat on your back.”
Three cheers for evidence-based medicine! Now, how about the L&D staff?

This reminds me of my first pregnancy. My pain management doctor was *very* worried about me pushing (afraid I would dislocate a vertebra, I have significant joint problems) and was thrilled to hear I planned to give birth in the water. The specialist OB I saw (at the behest of the regular OB) told me to avoid a c-section if at all possible. The regular OB? Even after hearing that said “well, i’d still like to schedule a c-section”. *rolls eyes* my homebirth midwife was much more accomodating. Why does it take a not-OB to recognize these things? And why does a reg OB not listen to the specialists?

Neurosurgeon?
I didn’t give the hospital an option, other than physically grabbing me and moving me. I *needed* to be up on my hands and knees.
