“Let’s Break Your Water & Get An IV Going To Speed Things Up.”
“Let’s break your water and get an IV going to speed things up.” – OB to mother who had made great progress until asked to get out of the tub and flat on her back on the bed.
I’m assuming when the OB says “get an IV going” s/he is referring to pitocin. I’m so tired of hearing about pitocin being given to women who are ALREADY IN LABOR just because contrax aren’t coming fast enough for the dr.(or whatever other dumb reason). I just read a birth story on webmd that comes to mind. Mama was 8 cm. and not feeling her contractions. Which I would say is pretty darn awesome. I’d be like “Sweet!” So what does the dr. do? Give her pitocin!! So she ended up getting an epidural to get through the last 2 cms. because once he started the darn pitocin she went from no pain to mega-pain. What was the point? Was he afraid she wouldn’t feel her pushing contractions or what? Stupid OB.

My doctor wanted to put me on pitocin just because my water had broken. It broke while I was in triage, so it had literally only been an hour when she suggested it. I was already at 6 cm. Her reason? “I’m very concerned about the risk of infection.” This was shortly after she told me in triage that she wanted to do a speculum exam to see how dilated I was, because at first she denied the possiblity that my water had broken, and her reason for that was “It looks amniotic…. we’ll get a speculum to check cause i’m a little paranoid about these things.”
>_<

Wait, what? She’s paranoid about infection, so she sticks an instrument in your vagina, which is a prime way to introduce infectious agents, even with a fresh speculum… I… hm. Wow.

No, see, she assumed I was wrong about my water breaking because my contractions weren’t close enough. Then when she looked, she thought it looked amniotic, so she grabbed a speculum because she was paranoid about something….I’m really not sure what. She was very young, but not a resident, so I think she’d only been a real doctor for a few weeks. The talk of infection was after I’d been admitted, about an hour after my water broke. so maybe the reason she was concerned with a risk of infection was because she was “paranoid” that she’d given me one.

I was 9.5cm when she wanted to “speed things up” I was feeling a little pushy, but was in agony, because they wouldn’t “let” me push. If they had just let me do little pushes, I’m sure that cervical lip would have disappeared. I felt the same sensation during my next birth and I just did what I felt was right. It was much better with midwives and at home.

With my most recent birth it was my MOM that was pushing the dr to give me pitocin to speed things along. I was too tired to argue with her but i really wish she had just shut up about it. fortunately the nurses were amazing and kept saying it wasn’t necessary since i was still having contractions. Blessed nurse

This was me. I arrived at the hospital at 5cm. My wonderful nurse suggested I get into the tub. Two hours later I was 9.5cm and on the order of the OB she reluctantly made me get out.
Once the OB showed up and I was out of the water, my “progress” abruptly halted. I was still getting gargatuan contractions, but they were’nt dilating me. Big surprise, with the OB demanding that I get an IV. I signed an AMA for the IV but did get talked into getting my water broken. In retrospect, I should have just gotten back into the tub.
She eventually got her way. She did something to scare me 2 pushes before my baby was born and got me to consent to a hep-lock. They put it in during the push with the warning “Don’t move”. Yeah, right. If I’d know the baby was almost out I wouldn’t have consented.

I’m so sorry. The doctor turned it into an unnecessary power struggle.

Or HER brain, in your OB’s case. What a cruel trick of nature, landing you with such a louse.
